General Summary:

This position is accountable for creating the field onboarding, training, and development vision for Colonial Life's sales organization with strategic focus on improving top line growth and bottom line results. This is accomplished through the design, development and implementation of comprehensive, national sales training and development curriculum and programs, as well as all the content and systems necessary to support this objective. This includes setting the strategic direction for the training of our national sales teams to include all representative level roles and core team roles. This position is also responsible for the design, development and execution of training strategies which enable and accelerate Colonial Life territory sales and inforce premium growth. Incumbent is responsible for the strategic direction, design and delivery of sales leadership programs designed for ongoing development in critical areas, improved bench strength and retention of critical sales and core team roles.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Onboarding, Training, Capability Development

  • Analyze and determine training needs of the sales organization; formulate and develop plans and programs to meet specific training needs.
  • Diagnose and understand sales training challenges and skill gaps and collaborate with subject matter experts to design and deliver training tactics needed to support sales representative development objectives.
  • Partner with Colonial Life Sales Leadership to develop and execute strategy and systems that enable core team effectiveness in building new and supporting veteran districts and drive overall territory sales and premium growth.
  • Create defined training path supported by curriculum with specific focus on Manager, Opener, Coordinator, and Benefit Counselor roles.
  • Create and deploy onboarding, training and development systems and programs for all core team roles.
  • Responsible for the deployment of key field leadership development programs inclusive of the vendor selection and evaluation process in partnership with P&C stakeholders.
  • Continuously monitor and solicit feedback on all training programs and materials to ensure accuracy, relevance, and effectiveness. Utilize data to drive enhancements for improved adoption and effectiveness.

Collaboration

  • Develop strong working relationships with and serve as a strategic partner to multiple stakeholders across departments such as CLA sales organization, national recruiting, broker and large case, strategic investment teams, growth and risk ops, product marketing, enrollment, regulatory compliance, sales team, and in force growth and development to ensure key capabilities/requirements are appropriately incorporated into our sales training programs.

Staff Management

  • Build and manage a sales training department to meet the diverse and dynamic needs of Colonial Life.
  • Lead teams that have responsibilities for the training strategy for the Manager, Opener, Coordinator, and Benefit Counselor Roles.
  • Through leading the Director of Sales Training and Curriculum Development, manage the technical design team in the development of high quality, innovative training solutions that use both traditional and emerging methods with an emphasis on effective joint field work, instructor led training and e-learning.
  • Provide direction and leadership to training partners such as the Territory Sales Trainers and Territory Development Consultants that are responsible for the delivery of training curriculum across the country.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in business, adult education, training & development or related field and/or 10+ years of experience in sales leadership, sales training, or other relevant business areas
  • Professional Training and Management Development experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data analytics to evaluate strategy and impact
  • Strong sales leadership partnerships established/proven
  • Proven interpersonal, negotiation, and influence skills; project management skills
  • Broad business background, orientation, and perspective
  • Consensus builder with a business partner mentality
  • Superior problem solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking with ability to translate into meaningful actions
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities efficiently and in a well-organized manner
  • Strong communication skills (internal and external)
  • Ability to understand the sales process and communicate effectively with and influence sales representatives, sales managers, sales leaders and home office content experts
  • Ability to understand and apply training design/methodology and adult learning principles and open to using alternative delivery methods
  • Sales, marketing, consulting, or management experience preferred
  • Extensive needs analysis and instructional design experience preferred
  • Travel required
  • Ability to lead change

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$114,100.00-$205,400.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
