The Washington Post is seeking a dynamic and self-motivated Tax Associate interested in collaborating with the Associate Director of Tax in maintaining a modern and forward-looking Tax Department. The Tax Associate will report directly to the Associate Director of Tax.

Responsibilities:
  • Tax:
    • Maintain timely compliance of all domestic and international tax related filings by collaborating with other Tax Team members and third-party providers to timely prepare and file Federal, state, and foreign income tax returns (including managing third-party providers for transfer pricing reporting) , Federal excise tax returns, property tax returns, local business license tax returns, state, foreign registration filings, preparing reports and calculations for sales/excise/occupation tax/VAT/GST compliance.
    • Assist the Tax Senior and Associate Director of Tax in collecting data for the annual R&D credit by attending engineering meetings, organizing support documents, and reviewing surveys.
    • Collaborate with third-party consultants on compliance and research related items by providing necessary reports, reconciling filings to the GL, and third-party reports, answering questions and carrying out tasks necessary to ensure proper record keeping and compliance.
    • Support with the preparation of sales and use tax accrual processes, including analyzing monthly company purchases to determine the monthly tax liabilities, compiling and reviewing invoices to determine product and service taxability, applying relevant tax exemptions, working with internal billing departments, etc.
    • Support with researching new filing obligations in the US by monitoring tax news that impacts on the Company's operations in direct and indirect tax nexus.
    • Collaborate with the Tax Senior and Associate Director of Tax to ensure that tax liabilities are timely remitted by calculating quarterly estimated payments and nonresident withholding requirements.
    • Meet tax statutory deadlines by maintaining the domestic and international tax calendar.
    • Support the Company's monthly close process by working with the Tax Senior, Associate Director of Tax, Accounting, and Budget teams to prepare monthly and quarterly tax accruals and budget.
    • Maintain the tax office mailbox by reviewing and scanning received mail on a bi-weekly basis.
    • Improve manual processes by leveraging automation tools such as Alteryx and AI.
    • Thoroughly document all domestic processes and decisions with policies and carryforward notes.
    • Support the Tax Senior and Associate Director of Tax in timely responding to domestic notices and inquiries from tax authorities.
    • Timely respond to inquiries from other business units.
    • Partner with other members of the tax team on new domestic and international initiatives.
    • Assist the Tax Senior and Associate Director of Tax on addressing queries and requests from internal business units by actively monitoring a shared team e-mailbox.
  • Treasury:
    • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Tax and VP of Finance on Global Mobility projects by assisting with foreign tax and bank account registrations on an as needed basis.
    • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Tax and VP of Finance on complying with US and foreign bank regulations by timely responding to various banking information reporting and compliance requests.
    • On a monthly basis, fund international bank accounts by reviewing respective balances and submitting funding requests when appropriate.
    • On as needed basis provide administrative support to maintain banking portals by adding/removing users, setting appropriate approval limits, and trouble shooting portal issues.
Motivation:
  • You are a tax professional with 1+ years of domestic or international income tax compliance background (partnership preferred but not required) looking to expand your tax knowledge to other domestic and international taxes applicable to a US business (sales and use tax, property taxes, other applicable taxes).
  • Public accounting experience is preferred.
  • You have at least one year of independently managing changing priorities. As the business is changing, new tax research and compliance needs arise and require timely input from the Tax Department.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects.
  • You have experience automating manual processes to drive overall process improvement.
  • You are excited to expand your knowledge of automation and leverage tools like Alteryx and AI to automate your day-to-day activities and various tax projects.
  • You are exceptionally organized and thorough. You take ownership of your projects.
  • You are excellent at written and oral communication skills and possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • You are proficient in Excel and have experience using Alteryx to automate manual processes.
  • You are obsessed with quality, self-review, and excellent customer service.
  • You are comfortable with asking questions and capable of having constructive conversations across the organization.
  • You are comfortable with taking direction and working directly with the Tax Senior, Associate Director of Tax or VP of Finance on various projects.
Qualifications:
  • 1+ years of relevant tax compliance experience.
  • Bachelor's in Accounting (Master's in Tax preferred) from an accredited college/university.
  • Advanced Excel skills (ability to work with large data sets and other calculation schedules, automate and simplify processes via advanced Excel capabilities, etc.)
  • Knowledge of OneSource or GoSystem tax compliance software.
  • Preferred experience with BNA Fixed Asset software and Alteryx.
  • Experience with Alteryx or other automation tools.
  • Natural curiosity to streamlining, automation, process improvement.
  • Demonstrated behaviors in problem-solving.
  • Strong bias for process improvement.
The Washington Post's policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

The salary range for this position is:
74,000.00 - 111,000.00 USD Annual

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
