The Senior Analyst, Travel Risk Management (Newsroom) is a pivotal role responsible for safeguarding the well-being of journalists during international and domestic assignments. This role involves creating and presenting comprehensive travel risk assessments, managing travel risk management platforms, and overseeing contractors and security operations abroad. The Senior Analyst will work closely with newsroom management, editors, and security teams to ensure that all travel assignments are conducted with the highest standards of safety and preparedness.

Reporting to the Global Director of Security, this role will have direct access to senior newsroom management.

  • Oversee the implementation and management of the Travel Risk Management (TRM) platform, ensuring all newsroom travelers engage with and utilize the platform for risk assessments, health, safety, and broader risk management needs.
  • Create and present detailed travel risk assessments, in a timely manner, for all international higher risk assignments. Present assessments with an optimized plan to designated newsroom management prior to any deployment.
  • Manage two full-time security contractors who support TRM efforts, ensuring their work and support aligns with overall safety objectives.
  • Regularly attend and contribute to newsroom meetings, pre-brief meetings for international assignments, and any Security Operations meetings.
  • Schedule, monitor, and track newsroom-specific safety training required before deployments, ensuring all staff being deployed have the proper training and that their certifications are updated and filed accordingly.
  • Working with multiple departments, ensure all necessary equipment (PPE, sat phones, devices, etc.) is issued and ready for deployment.
  • Ensure all newsroom staff traveling have maintained up-to-date records, such as a proof of life form.
  • Maintain and regularly update the International Crisis Management Plan, ensuring it is an integral component of the travel risk assessment and mitigation plan.
  • Continuously assess and improve TRM processes, staying ahead of emerging threats and ensuring The Washington Post's journalists can operate safely and effectively.
  • Ability to anticipate potential risks, devise mitigation strategies, and implement proactive solutions in a high-pressure environment.
  • Deep understanding of geopolitical, cultural, and security dynamics in different regions, particularly in conflict zones and high-risk areas.
  • Present quarterly updates to the Security Operations Team.
  • Responsible for managing budget items for International Safety.
Qualifications:
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex risk assessments clearly to non-experts.
  • 7-10 years of experience in travel risk management, security analysis, or a related field, with a strong focus on supporting journalists or media organizations.
  • Bachelor's degree in security studies, international relations, or a related field. Advanced certifications in travel risk management, security, or related areas are preferred.
  • Expertise in utilizing risk assessment tools and platforms, and strong familiarity with crisis management technologies and communication systems.
  • Proven ability to manage and oversee contractors and collaborate effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

The salary range for this position is:
91,800.00 - 153,000.00 USD Annual

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
