Overview:

Reporting to the Vice President, Group Benefits (GB) Priority Business, the Assistant Vice President, PB Growth and Acquisition is a key member for executing the priority business growth opportunity of doubling our premium from $500 million to $1billion, such as identifying quoting and enrollment technology partners, general agent (GA) relationships, and creating a presale and acquisition modernization model leveraging The Hartford's Priority Benefits technology platform. This includes setting growth, partner, and efficiency priorities and driving execution of the priority business digital-first strategies in each of these areas. The AVP will work in close partnership with Group Benefits leaders and functional partners across the company to deliver a transformational underwriting and presale framework and an enhanced sales and onboarding experience to our Priority Business customer and sales, broker, and GA partners.

The AVP would lead a team, including the acquisition presale leader and team, a business consultant, and a partnership leader; and will partner closely with technology, regional sales, and underwriting leaders to:

  • Ensure strong market alignment and consistent messaging to producers and distribution partners;
  • Work together to identify, address / resolve and explore acquisition opportunities, including quoting and enrollment partner technology and general agents; and
  • Underwriting and risk guidelines to achieve optimal sales, close ratio, efficiency, and profitability.

In addition to direct reports, including the extended acquisition team, this position indirectly leads and influences stakeholders across underwriting, product, sales, actuarial, operations, and has accountability for the health and model of the PB new business acquisition, sales, and Outlook planning.

The AVP is market-facing and must maintain awareness of competitors' offerings in this market segment, brokers and general agents, and potential technology and product partnership. The AVP will be a thought leader, presenting at conferences, broker events, webinars, and articles.

The AVP requires a unique combination of digital technology transformation acumen, sales and underwriting strategy, sophisticated knowledge of the business in the small and medium-sized GB marketplace, and exceptional communication skills in order to successfully influence senior leaders and the development of segment strategy growth and acquisition plans in Group Benefits.

This role can have a hybrid or remote work arrangement; for candidates near our Hartford, CT Home Office, this role will be in-office on a hybrid basis (Tuesday-Thursday in the office). For candidates in other geographies, you may be based remotely within the United States, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. Some travel is required with this role, roughly 20% of the time if you are based in CT and up to 33% of the time if you are based elsewhere.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10+ years of relevant commercial business experience required with at least two years of current or recent experience in digital platforms and/or transformation in a large corporate setting. Experience in Group Benefits insurance strongly preferred
  • Excellent communication, presentation and relationship skills. Experience with presenting and public speaking required; demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Superior understanding of business vision and strategy, with experience using data analysis to help inform value-added recommendation, demonstrated record of translating business strategy into action
  • Strong business acumen and financial savvy; experience managing financials and/or a budget preferred
  • Minimum of three years in a leadership role with managerial accountabilities in a large corporate setting required
  • Technology savvy, experience with BEAM or a similar platform desirable
  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree a plus
  • Able and willing to travel as required (likely ~20% of the time if based in Hartford and ~33% of the time if based elsewhere)

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$169,360 - $254,040
