Essential Duties:
The Director of the Intelligent Systems Center of Excellence is responsible for leading an organization at the cutting edge of AI autonomy for air, space, and ground platforms whose primary focus will be to innovate and create solutions that provide discriminators for HRL. The Director leads a team of scientists and engineers with expertise in deep learning, assured autonomy, and human-machine teaming. The Director collaborates with stakeholders across HRL and its LLC members to create new opportunities, ensure project execution, and ensure alignment with HRL's strategic goals. The Center Director will actively work with other labs in HRL to integrate AI with other leading HRL subsystems to provide unique solutions for our customers. The Director supports ISC staff in formulating new research directions, identifying potential customers and markets, transition strategies, and business development for funding opportunities. The Director oversees ISC resource planning and execution for talent, facilities, and equipment. The Director will promote a culture of continuous learning and adoption of emerging technologies, tools, and methodologies that enhance AI capabilities and performance of the team and the organization. In collaboration with Executive Leadership, the Director will define metrics for ISC success, track performance against targets, and identify areas for improvement.

Required Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of experience with demonstrated technical leadership of a team of scientists and/or engineers. Demonstrated experience within the past 2 years securing new grants and/or contracts for R&D in AI autonomy. Strong track record within the past 5 years in exceeding customer expectations on challenging R&D projects. Demonstrated line and project management experience; proven record of inspiring direct reports. Demonstrated ability to set clear organizational vision and objectives with standards for accountability; ability to coach and mentor technical staff. Demonstrated understanding of end user needs and connecting them with cutting edge technology in order to provide revolutionary new capabilities in the automotive, aerospace, and broad national security arenas. Experience managing successful collaborations across the organization and with external organizations. Experience with implementation of advanced ML/AI methodologies with hardware platforms. Documented evidence of technical contribution and recognition in the technical community.

Required Knowledge:
Expertise in applying advanced AI techniques to real-world problems, such as predictive modeling, natural language processing, computer vision, or recommender systems at scale. Demonstrated ability to market new technology concepts to a broad spectrum of end users. Skilled translation of foundational technology developments into a vision for new operational/product capabilities in the automotive, aerospace, and national security fields. Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with senior executive teams. Ability to think critically, creatively, and to anticipate and solve challenging problems. Strong leadership skills, familiarity with intellectual property management, and financial / business acumen.

Required Education:
M.S. or PhD, in Computer Science or related field.

Essential Requirements:
Strong interpersonal skills; technical acumen, team building and leadership capabilities; strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills; travel required.

Special Requirements:
Ability to obtain interim and/or final TS/SCI (with CI polygraph) clearance (post start); active TS/SCI (with or without polygraph) DoD or IC (or DOE equivalent) security clearance is a plus. US citizenship required.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $204,665- $262,242 + bonus + benefits.
