The Role:
Yubico is looking for a Hardware Engineer who is innovative and passionate about the hardware and firmware design of cutting-edge security devices as well as related production equipment and testers. In this role, you will be part of the team that takes new ideas from prototypes to mass-producible hardware. As a Hardware Engineer, you will also be responsible for analyzing hardware designs for manufacturability, security, and reliability. Key success criteria for the role include the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, attention to detail, and a commitment to the highest standards.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Design and develop secure embedded hardware for security devices
- Create and optimize PCB layouts using EDA tools (OrCAD, Altium)
- Perform hardware debugging using JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers
- Develop and execute in-circuit and functional tests to validate hardware reliability
- Ensure manufacturability (DFM) and production readiness, collaborating with suppliers and contract manufacturers
- Implement security best practices (TPM, UEFI, Secure Boot, TrustZone) in hardware design
- Work cross-functionally with software, mechanical, and production teams to develop integrated solutions
- Document hardware designs, test procedures, and security protocols for internal and external use
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to stakeholders, including the company owner
- Take ownership of projects, demonstrating resourcefulness and a self-driven approach to problem-solving
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering or a relevant technical discipline (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering
- Experience designing embedded hardware systems using EDA/PCB design software (e.g., OrCAD, Altium)
- Familiarity with bus communication protocols (USB, I2C, SPI, UART, PCIe, RS232/RS485)
- Ability to design for manufacturability and guide assembly through various stages
- Experience with microcontrollers (preferably STM, TI, Freescale, NXP) and relevant software stacks, as well as bare-metal programming
- Proficiency in hardware debugging and use of relevant tools such as JTAG, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers
- Knowledge of x86 and/or ARM chipset and firmware security (e.g., TPM, UEFI, TrustZone, secure boot)
