About the Team:

The Apple Player SDK team is a team of passionate engineers dedicated to building the best video playback experience in the industry for iOS and tvOS devices. We're obsessed with performance, quality, and user experience, and we're looking for a driven and experienced leader to guide us in pushing the boundaries of what's possible. We thrive in a collaborative, agile environment and value innovation and continuous improvement.

About the Role:

As the Senior Software Development Manager for our iOS/tvOS video player team, you will be responsible for leading, mentoring, and growing a high-performing engineering team. You will own the technical vision and execution for our video player on Apple devices, ensuring we deliver a world-class experience to our users. This role requires a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills, and a passion for creating innovative solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management: Lead and mentor a team of iOS/tvOS engineers, fostering a positive, collaborative, and results-oriented environment. Conduct performance reviews, provide career guidance, and identify growth opportunities for team members.
  • Technical Ownership: Own the technical roadmap and execution for the iOS/tvOS video playback platform. Drive architectural decisions, ensuring the platform is scalable, performant, and maintainable. Contribute hands-on technically as needed, including code reviews and potentially some coding.
  • Agile Execution: Lead the team through the full software development lifecycle using Agile methodologies (Scrum or Kanban). Facilitate sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and other Agile ceremonies. Drive continuous improvement in our development processes.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Collaborate effectively with product management, design, and other engineering teams to define requirements, prioritize features, and deliver high-quality products. Communicate effectively with stakeholders on project status, risks, and dependencies.
  • Quality Assurance: Champion quality throughout the development process. Work with the team to implement robust testing strategies, including unit tests, integration tests, and UI tests.
  • Innovation: Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in iOS/tvOS development and video playback technologies. Encourage innovation within the team and explore new approaches to improve the user experience.
  • Performance Optimization: Drive performance optimization efforts for the video playback platform, focusing on metrics such as startup time, buffering, and playback quality.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on iOS/tvOS development.
  • 3+ years of experience in a management or leadership role.
  • Deep understanding of iOS and tvOS frameworks, including AVFoundation, Core Media, and related technologies.
  • Strong experience with video playback technologies, including streaming protocols (HLS, DASH), codecs, and DRM.
  • Proven experience leading and mentoring engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies (Scrum or Kanban).
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive technical decisions and deliver high-quality products.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Passion for creating innovative and user-friendly experiences.
  • Experience with performance optimization and profiling tools.
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with SwiftUI and/or Combine.
  • Experience with video encoding and transcoding.
  • Experience with low-level performance optimization.
  • Contributions to open-source projects.
