General Summary:

This position is responsible for the overall effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity of non-claims operational parts of the Long-Term Care (LTC) business, including both Group and Individual. Included in these operations is execution of critical block management strategies such as the implementation of rate changes and any policy options delivered in connection with the changes; and management actions in conjunction with managing the level and risk profile of new and existing customers.

In partnership with the Closed Block Leadership Team, this role supports the design and execution of the strategy to achieve the overall financial and operational goals of the business. This role works in partnership, as needed, with others in the service and field organizations for Unum to execute on LTC actions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Along with other Closed Block Senior Leadership Team (SLT) members, responsible for the development and execution of the LTC strategy, inclusive of potential longer term mitigation or divestiture options.
  • Responsible for the implementation and execution of all rate increase activities. This includes Group LTC (GLTC) and Individual (ILTC) LTC and covers multiple administrative and rating systems.
  • Responsible for strategies designed to manage the footprint and risk profile of the existing block.
  • Accountable for developing and maintaining relationship with key Unum US and Unum Group partners to ensure LTC strategy is fully executed. Heavy focus on the IT and Field organizations.
  • Accountable for Customer Service and Underwriting for LTC, including the servicing of approximately 1M insureds, 4000+ employers and the processing of $650M+ of in-force premium.
  • Responsible for keeping products and operational processes fully compliant with the changing regulatory landscape, with special focus on increased consumer protection mandates from state DOIs.
  • Accountable for establishing metrics for measuring LTC performance with recommendations for enhancing performance by ensuring effective processes are in place.
  • Accountable for the day to day operations of the Long Term Care Operations, ensuring effective organization design and driving a performance culture with particular focus on people development. Create a work environment that fosters employee engagement.
  • Responsible for designing and driving change as needed by continually looking at options for process, partners, and technology to better outcomes.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective, visible leadership across Underwriting, Service and Sales as well as other internal business areas.
  • Maintain a strong partnership with LTC Benefits organization to ensure high quality service is provided to customers and that LTC is run as a single business versus multiple parts.
  • Provide thought leadership via monitoring of LTC industry trends and insights.
  • Work with Government Affairs and engage in public policy and lobbying activities as needed to shape the LTC landscape.
  • Develop and maintain a culture of a high-performance environment and engaged work force.
  • Ensure LTC talent is continually developed, and institutional knowledge is not lost despite LTC being a closed block.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • An undergraduate degree in relevant academic discipline (or equivalent) required; MBA is preferred
  • Extensive business background in an applicable field (finance, underwriting, etc.)
  • Possess excellent operational skills; incumbent understands the strategic application of technology and process reengineering concepts to enhance operating effectiveness in a high-volume production area.
  • Demonstrated record of achieving business results
  • Strong risk management expertise
  • Data driven strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to build credible business strategies based on "big picture" view of internal and external information, trends, and marketplace data

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$144,900.00-$273,800.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
