About the Role

Uber is seeking an Engineering Manager within its Storage Platform organization. The Storage Platform organization is responsible for all the primary online distributed database services that are exercised millions of times per second to power the core of the Uber business every second of every day.

We are looking for a seasoned engineering manager to lead a team in building and operating services that enable cloud databases to be used safely and effectively at Uber.

The team would provide an operationally safe mechanism for Product teams throughout Uber to to use cloud database offerings that give stakeholders a safe and integrated experience with the Uber ecosystem while also providing unencumbered access to use the rich features of cloud database services.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead and scale a team of engineers, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Define the technical vision for and ensure alignment with Storage Platform's broader strategy and stakeholders.
  • Drive execution, delivering cutting-edge solutions that impact millions of rides per day.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Progragm Management, Finance to deliver aligned results.
  • Grow and develop top engineering talent, providing mentorship and career growth opportunities.
  • Uphold engineering excellence and ensure a scalable, reliable, and efficient platform.
  • Influence senior leadership, shaping the future of Uber's cloud strategy.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Building and operating large-scale cloud-distributed systems, with reliability and observability and evolvability.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development
  • Experience in partnering with product and program management teams
  • Outstanding technical skills (backend engineering, object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms): Uber managers can lead from the front when the situation calls for it.
  • 3+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer science or related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and analysis implications clearly across different audiences and varying levels of the organization
  • Great management and team development skills: the ability to set a roadmap and goals for a team and every one of its members, delegate wisely, mentor engineers, deliver frequent and transparent feedback, help team members grow in their careers, and deliver results

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building cloud services with Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, Google GCP, or Oracle OCI.
  • Ability to take a project from scoping requirements through the actual launch of the project
  • Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements and describe software product features and technical designs.
  • Comfortable wearing multiple hats depending on the needs of the team
  • 8+ years of proven experience in software engineering
  • Experience building and operating cloud-scale distributed database systems

For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$257,000 per year - USD$285,500 per year.
