About the Role
We have a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic lawyer to join our Japan legal team that sits within our broader APAC Legal Team. Our APAC business is extremely diverse and is a key strategic region for Uber.
The Japan Legal team manages regulatory, commercial and litigation work for our Mobility and Delivery business in Japan.
This position will be based in Tokyo and will report to Senior Counsel, Japan.
Your Impact In This Role:
- Be a trusted adviser to the business, and provide legal support on a wide variety of initiatives and issues for Uber's Japan Mobility and Delivery business.
- Manage a wide variety of legal work for the Japan markets, including regulatory matters, contracts, commercial advisory work, litigation and disputes and company secretarial work.
- Draft and negotiate key strategic contracts to support the growth of the Mobility and Delivery business.
- Provide product counselling for our fast-moving product team that manages legal risk but allows for sustainable and continued growth.
- Advise on and manage disputes and legal proceedings across the Mobility and Delivery business in various practice areas.
- Understand, interpret and apply current regulations as applicable to Uber's various business models in the region and advise on ongoing compliance.
- Work closely with our Policy, Tax, Communications, Safety and Operations teams to support regulatory engagement, strategic projects and to refine and shape business operations.
- Conduct legal research and evaluate risks regarding business operations in Japan.
- Prepare legal educational material for training programmes in-house to both legal and non-legal personnel.
- This is a hands-on role and you'll be expected to handle significant and complex legal matters with short turnaround times.

What You Will Need:
- 3-5 years of relevant experience as a Japan-qualified lawyer (Bengoshi) within a recognised law firm or multinational company.
- Proven track record of advising on a range of legal, commercial, regulatory and litigious issues; competition law experience would be a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills (with a high level of emotional intelligence).
- Native level in Japanese, Business level in English.

- Demonstrated effectiveness operating in complex organizational environments with strong stakeholder management skills and self-starter qualities.
- Superior analytical and legal skills, mature judgment, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative and think two steps ahead.
- Highly motivated, creative and laser-focused on the details.
- The ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and to re-prioritize quickly to address shifting business needs; able to thrive in high impact/high profile situations.
