Product management is not an appropriate for early career professionals. Product managers should have at least seven years experience germane to either the product they will be creating (i.e. a market visionary profile) or the process of creating software (i.e. the craftsperson profile). Product managers who would be assigned to new products (zero-to-one, or prior to product market fit) must have worked in a team doing this successfully prior to becoming the product manager of such a product.
Like many roles in technology, a product manager needs to devote significant time per week to ongoing learning. This is focused at staying abreast of best practices, shifting trends in the craft of making software, changing tastes from target customers, and understanding the new thinking of product manager pioneers or experts.
