Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring a Software Development Manager to lead our Content Applications team. This team is responsible for implementing backend features and maintaining backend applications. The work is in the critical path for essential content experience surfaces. As a manager of this team, you will work closely with other engineering teams and our product department to ensure timely roadmap delivery and quality support for internal stakeholders. This role requires a manager who can see the big picture while taking ownership of critical backend applications.

  • Mentor and coach talented backend and devops engineers
  • Recruit new engineers and grow a strong team
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks effectively
  • Work with stakeholders in engineering, product, and news to prioritize milestones and mitigate business risks
  • Manage team members across projects in a fast paced cross functional environment
  • Provide foundational support and empower team members to own their work
  • Drive forward and provide a vision on engineering goals and technology usage
  • Manage an on call cycle and ensure constant coverage on critical systems
  • Establish and foster a standard of engineer excellence that will maintain stability and quality across all of our systems
  • Ensure quality code and cloud practices are being used by the team
Qualifications
It's okay not to meet 100% of these requirements! We're primarily looking for people who meet some of these requirements and are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skill set.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, equivalent field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8 years +of experience working as a software engineer
  • Experience working with languages Python, Java, and Javascript.
  • Proficiency with web frameworks such as Flask and Nodejs.
  • Strong experience in command line (Unix & Linux) navigation and revision tracking (Git)
  • Experience working with message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, and SQS.
  • Experience with DevOps technologies such as Docker and Jenkins.
  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as S3, EC2, ELB, SES, and CloudWatch.
  • Strong experience with databases, MongoDB and MySQL preferred.
  • Experience writing unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills for technical and business audiences.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

The salary range for this position is:
131,500.00 - 219,100.00 USD Annual

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
