The Content Delivery team is part of the broader Creator Experience team at The Washington Post. You'll be supported by a leadership team with deep expertise across the Post's editorial workflows, guiding you as you help shape the future of content delivery and creator tools.

Responsibilities
  • Mentor and coach talented full stack engineers
  • Recruit new engineers and grow a strong team
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks effectively
  • Manage team members across projects in a fast paced cross functional environment
  • Provide foundational support and empower team members to own their work
  • Drive forward and provide a vision on engineering goals and technology usage
  • Work with stakeholders in engineering and product to prioritize milestones and mitigate business risks
  • Manage an on-call cycle and ensure constant coverage on critical systems
  • Provide powerful insights by surfacing metrics and performance data to stakeholders and other engineers
  • Work closely with other engineering teams to understand their systems and work within the constraints of different technical stacks
  • Establish and foster a standard of engineer excellence that will maintain stability and quality across all of our systems
  • Ensure quality code and cloud practices are being used by the team
  • Oversee the operation and stability of our in-house email platform, ensuring high-quality, consistent email delivery
Qualifications

It's okay not to meet 100% of these requirements! We're primarily looking for people who meet some of these requirements and are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skill set. We're looking for motivated individuals with experience in some of the following areas. If you're eager to learn new technologies and expand your skill set, we'd love to hear from you:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of experience as a software engineer, with a focus on:
    • Leading a team working primarily with TypeScript/JavaScript and Java backends. Experience with Next.js, Express.js, and React is essential.
    • Strong command-line skills (Unix/Linux) and version control (Git)
    • DevOps tools such as Docker and Jenkins
    • Working knowledge of MongoDB and PostgreSQL required to oversee database architecture and implementation.
    • Writing unit and integration tests to ensure code quality
    • Preferred: Experience implementing LLMs into existing toolsets and workflows, and general knowledge of how LLMs operate.
Leadership and Management Skills:
  • Proven experience managing and developing technical teams, especially in content delivery or email-related platforms
  • Ability to create a collaborative, high-performing team culture
  • Skilled in managing performance and resolving conflicts
  • Guide and mentor a JavaScript-focused engineering team, ensuring high-quality code standards and efficient development practices.
Communication Skills:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively present email-related metrics, project updates, and incident reviews
Problem-Solving Abilities:
  • Analytical mindset to identify challenges and implement effective solutions for email platform stability
  • Experience managing high-pressure situations, especially around email-driven incidents or content deadlines
Organizational Skills:
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, such as team coaching, project oversight, and strategic planning
  • Proficient in tracking and analyzing team performance metrics
Security and Compliance Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with security protocols and experience managing email system security tasks
Adaptability:
  • Ability to adapt to changing industry standards, especially in email systems and content delivery workflows
The Washington Post's policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

The salary range for this position is:
144,600.00 - 241,100.00 USD Annual

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
