How will you make an impact?

Provide strategic leadership and scientific guidance for the Lab Operations including Development Operations, Analytical Operations, Metrology, and Lab Support Services. Ensures the successful execution of a staff development program, enabling excellent client services and regulatory compliance. As a member of the Quality Leadership Team, supports the continuous improvement initiatives and promotes quality culture. Ensures all OTD, RFT and revenue targets are met.

What will you do:

  • Provide leadership to assigned staff by performing the following: leading organizational change; developing and empowering staff; cultivating relationships; putting staff in a position to succeed, meeting their personal career goals while also achieving organizational goals; building effective teams that apply their diverse skills and perspectives to achieve common goals; driving engagement and creating a climate where staff are motivated to do their best.
  • Direct and manage all Laboratory activities to meet compliance, client, delivery, and financial goals
  • Develop and drive the Laboratory strategy for the group
  • Establish continual improvement of the quality compliance system within the Laboratory
  • Drive staff development, recruitment and performance management
  • Manage operational performance using key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Provide technical support to Business Management, Tech Transfer, Project Management, Technical Operations, and actively participates in customer projects
  • Direct and manage all operating expenses, laboratory budget, Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and top and bottom-line results
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with the site management, other departments, and clients
  • Grow the Laboratory department and the PSG business by raising the profile of the Lab and its capabilities in Patheon, the Pharmaceutical and related industries and the academic/scientific communities
  • Make recommendations for acquisition of new equipment and facility upgrades to enable the growth of our business
  • Support global and promotes PSG Laboratory Performance improvement initiatives. Leads or actively participates in inter-laboratory working groups.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with companion Thermo Fisher Scientific Business Groups such as the Analytical Instruments Group (AIG) and Clinical Research Group (CRG).
  • Promote a safe working environment, report potential hazards and ensure all direct reports follow Environmental Health and Safety procedures.
  • Select, develop and evaluate staff to ensure the efficient operation of the function and works with and advises staff on administrative policies and procedures

How will you get here?

Education:

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Chemistry or related science required.

Experience:

Minimum 10 years' experience in quality control/analytical development within the pharmaceutical industry

Minimum of 10 years previous management experience.

Equivalency:

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrates analytical/scientific skills. Experience in Organizational Development. Ability to establish relations with prospects and new clients and ability to use scientific/technical acumen and knowledge of Analytical Development and Quality Control capabilities to influence client discussions. Exceptional GMP, GLP, ICH, Health Canada, FDA, EU compliance knowledge. Ability to drive functional, technical and operational excellence in a fast-paced environment. Ability to inspire and foster innovation, collaboration, transparency and team effectiveness. Ability to think strategically with the ability to direct the resolution of technical problems using innovative approaches. Applies data integrity and principles of ALCOA++. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written). Experience with Microsoft Office Applications. Proficiency in the English Language.

Standards and Expectations:

Follow all Environmental Health & Safety Policies and Procedures. Work collaboratively with fellow team members, modelling positive team principles and partnering to meet project and departmental objectives. Carry out all duties within strict compliance to quality systems SOP's and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Maintain workspace in a clean and orderly fashion. Actively engage in and adhere to departmental systems in order to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow (visual management, scheduling systems, etc.). Be client and patient conscious at all times. Understand Key Performance Indicators and strive to improve the performance of the team by identifying areas for system improvements and engage in problem solving. Models positive thinking and is open to change, motivating the team to adapt to shifts in priorities and new ways of working. Proactively identify areas for improvement in the execution of procedures. Communicate risks to timelines in a proactive manner. Consistently strives to improve skills and knowledge in related field.

Physical Requirements:

Light physical effort and fatigue. Walks, sits or stands for limited periods. May require occasional equipment operation including keyboard equipment. Lifts light items for limited duration. Typically located in a comfortable indoor area. There may be regular exposure to mild physical discomfort from factors such as dust, fumes or odours, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights. Use of Personal Protective equipment may be required and may include any of the following: safety glasses, safety shoes, lab coat, gloves, hair net, beard cover, safety apron, respirator on occasionally.
