We are looking for a qualified and experienced lawyer to join our team as Legal Counsel in Tokyo, Japan. In this role, you will be part of a global Legal & Compliance team of over 200 lawyers and specialists responsible for all legal and compliance matters arising from our dynamic business operations in Japan.

This role will report directly to the Head of Legal & Compliance Japan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support a broad range of legal and compliance matters, including government contracts, antitrust, marketing and promotions, intellectual property, trade compliance, and anti-corruption.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements with vendors, partners, and customers.
  • Lead a robust compliance culture across diverse businesses and provide guidance/improve processes on regulations surrounding the businesses.
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis to support decision-making processes.
  • Handle dispute resolution with a focus on achieving favorable outcomes for the company.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and Japanese bar qualification.
  • 3+ years of relevant legal experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal department with a strong commercial focus, preferably including substantial experience supporting multinational companies.
  • Courage to lead with integrity and to take tough communications when necessary.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn new legal and business areas and find effective legal solutions as a business partner in a constantly evolving environment.
  • Team player both inside and outside the legal function.
  • Ability to lead and participate in cross-functional project teams often involving overseas colleagues.
  • Effective oral and written communication and presentation style to interact with diverse audiences, including senior management, business clients, and outside counsels/professionals.
  • Native in Japanese, business-level English writing and speaking skills required.
