The Underwriting Senior Business Consultant position in Group Reinsurance Plus (GRP) is a dynamic position involving the application of product knowledge and technical underwriting skills to the best practices, training and quality management provided for the benefit of GRP and its reinsurance clients. This position involves partnership with key underwriting and business contacts both internally and externally to deliver creative, yet practical solutions.

Responsibilities

Best Practices

  • Act as the gatekeeper of GRP best practices to ensure new guidelines, process and procedures, and related underwriting bulletin articles have been fully vetted, focusing predominantly on experience rated pricing and other "large" case topics.
  • Work closely with GRP Underwriting Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and GB Underwriting Best Practices to ensure that GRP's underwriting policies and procedures are reflective of current practices, where deemed to be applicable.
  • Draft, peer review and publish new or revised content for our internal underwriting SharePoint sites and external underwriting manuals.

Training and Education

  • Develop, deliver and maintain internal and client company training curriculum, including robust and pertinent case studies, training agreements, knowledge assessments and course evaluations, focusing primarily on the pricing protocols, risk assessment, financial analysis and other topics unique to experience rated and manually rated business for Group Life, Disability and Supplemental Health.

Quality Management

  • Perform internal quality management reviews for group life and disability, including rate development, policies and procedures, proposal and presale analysis memos, and provide thoughtful insight as to an individual's areas of excellence and opportunity.
  • Perform presale quality management reviews for reinsurance clients that perform their own underwriting as well as other special studies, audits and training reviews to gain insight into GRP or client underwriting practices.
  • Develop and work with others to execute on action plans designed to improve the quality of GRP and client underwriting based on quality management results, such as enhanced best practices, training, revised underwriting authority limits, etc.

Strategic Reserve

  • Act as strategic reserve and underwrite new business quotes, renewals and sold case submissions as requested during periods of high demand or limited capacity on other teams.

Other

  • Lead and/or actively participate in various functional or cross-functional initiatives within GRP or with other areas within Group Benefits.

Qualifications

  • Group life and disability underwriting skills, preferably with 4 or more years underwriting experience including experience rated size segments.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, including ability to communicate to audiences with varying levels of expertise and job level.
  • Proven analytical abilities with keen attention to detail balanced with the ability to see and make sense of the big picture, make recommendations and propose solutions.
  • Demonstrated organization and prioritization management skills, including project management and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced work environment
  • Highly self-motivated, takes ownership and is able to work independently and with limited direction
  • Group reinsurance, advanced product, continuous improvement and and/or change management experience preferred but not required.

Salary $85,040 - $133,800

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

85,040 - 133,800

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
