The Assistant Director will be a key member of the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team, supporting the Middle and Large Commercial (MLC) organization.

The position requires strong partnership with both Business and Finance leaders to provide financial support, strategic analysis, and business insight. The role is responsible for annual budgeting, periodic forecasts, monthly financial analysis, and management reporting, as well as engaging in ad-hoc requests and special projects.

Our ideal candidate is someone with an analytical mindset who is eager to learn, driven to continuously improve, and a highly collaborative teammate. The role will report to the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis and will also work with the AVP and CFO for MLC.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in the Hartford, CT office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Primary Finance point of contact and subject matter expert for 2 MLC business units, including analysis, reporting, and forecasting.
  • Develop 3-year forecasts for written premium and direct expenses through effective partnerships with business leaders and other support departments (Expense, Actuarial, Reinsurance); these forecasts affect earnings guidance at the broader company level
  • Provide analytical support and financial guidance to our business partners to enhance the decision-making process and to achieve their operating plan/targets (Revenue growth, Earnings, ROE and other key metrics).
  • Analyze, monitor, interpret, and effectively report results for business units, including variance analysis vs Budget and Prior Year, monitoring business trends and highlighting any risks/opportunities.
  • Responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and relevance of financial and management reporting.
  • Prepare monthly reporting packages (Actual and Forecast) and present results in business review meetings.
  • Continuously improve and streamline reporting processes and analyses through customer feedback and applied learnings/experience in the role to improve efficiency.
  • Engage in ad-hoc analysis and special projects to support the CFO and business as needed.
  • Develop strong working relationships throughout MLC and the Finance organization and be a valuable contributor in the development and execution of the MLC strategy.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of finance experience
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related field is preferred, CPA or MBA is a plus.
  • Strong Excel skills and PowerPoint skills; TM1 experience a plus.
  • Familiarity with insurance accounting and reporting
  • Candidate must be highly motivated, inquisitive, detail-oriented, and performance driven with a strong sense of accountability
  • Strong analytical skills, with a proven track record of taking initiative to research and resolve issues
  • Ability to learn quickly and assimilate new applications
  • Ability to react quickly, while successfully balancing multiple competing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment, with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and to demonstrate professionalism while interacting with personnel at various levels through-out the enterprise

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$98,800 - $148,200
