Job Description

Tewksbury Hospital, part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a dynamic and experienced Staff Psychiatrist to deliver exceptional psychiatric, psychological, and addiction treatment services to adults with chronic medical and/or mental illnesses and behavioral challenges. In this role, you will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary clinical team to provide comprehensive care for patients with psychiatric comorbidities. Your expertise will shape effective clinical plans, ensuring the highest standards of mental health evaluation, treatment, and documentation for inpatient medical units. With a focus on quality improvement, you will actively contribute to advancing patient outcomes and enhancing the delivery of mental health services.

This position also offers the opportunity to engage in teaching and mentoring, overseeing professional students and residents, while playing a leadership role in hospital committees. Your contributions will include fostering seamless transitions of care, optimizing staffing plans, and shaping clinical policies to meet the diverse needs of patients. As a valued member of the Tewksbury Hospital medical staff, you will be at the forefront of delivering compassionate and innovative mental health care within a supportive and collaborative environment.

Please Note: This position works 40 hours per week, days, Monday through Friday.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

• Provide direct psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for inpatients in the DPH units of Tewksbury Hospital, collaborating with medical clinicians for comprehensive patient care.

• Conduct thorough mental health assessments, document findings, and recommend treatment plans in patient medical records.

• Evaluate and manage psychotropic medication therapy, making adjustments based on patients' clinical conditions and treatment needs.

• Actively participate in multidisciplinary mental health rounds, offering insights and guidance on patient care.

• Oversee and support the work of staff psychologists involved in the care of patients under psychiatric management.

• Collaborate with external agencies to facilitate effective care transitions into and out of the facility.

• Develop and implement staffing plans that align clinical resources with patient care needs and priorities.

• Review and provide recommendations on clinical policies and practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality mental health services.

• Monitor and improve the quality of mental health services provided, initiating quality improvement measures as needed.

• Participate in hospital committees and medical staff responsibilities, contributing to the development and enhancement of institutional practices.

Required Qualifications:

• Comprehensive knowledge of psychiatry, medicine, and diagnostic and treatment methods, including psychotropic medications and their uses in psychiatric care.

• Familiarity with interviewing techniques and psychological research methods to assess and address mental health conditions effectively.

• Understanding of human growth and development theories, social determinants of health, and the challenges facing diverse and disadvantaged populations.

• Proficiency in interpreting medical records, patient profiles, and related documents, with the ability to analyze data and make informed clinical recommendations.

• Skilled in developing, planning, and organizing client treatment programs tailored to individual needs.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly, concisely, and logically.

• Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with patients from varied ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds, including those under physical and emotional stress.

• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, exercising sound judgment, and staying calm in stressful or emergency situations.

• Capability to supervise, plan, assign, and coordinate the activities of others, ensuring harmonious and productive working relationships.

• Willingness to work in medical or mental health institutions, with a focus on delivering high-quality psychiatric care and support.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least three years of residency training in a recognized program in psychiatry AND at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the field of psychiatry.

Special Requirements: Current and valid registration as a physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
