Job Description

Taunton State Hospital is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Registered Nurse IV - Nurse Supervisor. The selected candidate provides and supervises the provision of direct nursing care and treatment to adult psychiatric patients by participating as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, employing professional standards of practice by assessing health care and educational needs of patients and their families, implementing nursing interventions and evaluating outcomes. The nursing supervisor assists in admission and discharge of patients, facilitating milieu groups, supervising assigned staff and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment. Performs related duties as required.


Please Note
: The incumbent will work full-time on the third shift from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Days off are: Week 1 - Sunday/Thursday; Week 2 - Tuesday/Saturday.

Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Provides nursing care to adult psychiatric patients by assessing their health and mental health status, recording related data (including entering patient information into the medical record), administering treatment and medications utilizing a Person-Centered Approach within a Recovery model of care.
  • Establishes a rapport with all patients, evaluating patients' responses, and in conjunction with other team members, adjusting their care to ensure the daily needs, dignity and human rights of the patients are met, therefore facilitating a speedy recovery.
  • Receives 16-hour report from previous shift and assesses needs to be addressed.
  • Collects pertinent data on an ongoing basis during shift, writes information on supervisor's report and discusses issues and problems of day with oncoming supervisors to provide continuity of care.
  • Arranges coverage for the next shift by providing adequate staff to meet patient needs.
  • Assigns and gives direction to staff on an ongoing basis throughout the shift, adjusting assignments as needed. Plans and assigns nursing duties according to the nature of the activity to be accomplished utilizing the principles and practices of supervision by evaluating the capabilities of subordinates (and available resources) to provide a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • During unit rounds, oversees the administration of quality care of all clients through assessment, instruction, evaluation, and supervision of nursing staff as indicated.
  • Communicates all pertinent information to hospital and nursing administration when indicated.
  • Evaluates the capabilities of subordinates to provide a safe and therapeutic environment, provides assistance to staff in improving their skills and abilities and completes formal employee evaluations (EPRS) in a timely manner for assigned staff.
  • Completes supervisory office work, i.e., census, staff absentee reports, daily staffing sheet, nursing care needs assessment, etc.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Leadership regarding patient and staff issues and needs.
  • Serves as a role model and resource person for nursing staff (hospital wide), by taking initiative in meeting patient needs, demonstrating professionalism and respect in all interactions, and working collaboratively with all colleagues.
  • Investigates complaints by patients and others regarding such matters as methods of treatment, room assignments, etc., and attempts to resolve such complaints to promote patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Leads and models crisis resolution activities. Responds, delegates, and performs in psychiatric and medical emergencies.
  • Evaluates nursing activities by reviewing patient medical records, observing nursing care, and visiting patients to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed, and that treatments and medications are administered in accordance with physician orders.
  • Practices principles of MANDT, including prevention, trauma-informed care, de-escalation and restraint/seclusion only when necessary to provide a safe environment. Assists patients in reviewing and revising their Safety Plan (e.g., SWAP) and brings recommended changes to the Treatment Team.
  • May be called upon to perform functions of subordinate nursing staff. As assigned, provides direct care service, assists with patient admissions by collecting data, assessing learning needs, and participates in multidisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Assists patients in preparing for transfer or discharge to a less restrictive setting by providing health and mental health teaching to maximize the rehabilitation potential of each patient and by facilitating a therapeutic milieu group that meets minimally once per week.
  • Actively participates in the identification, planning and implementation of hospital wide and unit-based performance improvement and team building activities. Remains informed of hospital and departmental policies and procedures, as well as Joint Commission and CMS standards, to ensure that regulatory and departmental standards are met, and a safe therapeutic environment is provided.
  • Attends seminars, workshops, conferences, and staff meetings to maintain professional proficiency and/ or licensure.
  • Performs other appropriate nursing duties as assigned.


Preferred Qualifications
:

  • Attendance for re-certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and MANDT program.
  • Must complete all mandatory trainings electronically, in writing or when assigned to a class.
  • Prior experience preferred.
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.


License and/or Certification Requirements:


  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Taunton State Hospital (TSH) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is a 62-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient services to adults with major mental illnesses. Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
