The Department of Mental Health at the Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Registered Nurse IV to work with resilient patients navigating their journey on the road to recovery. The Charge Nurse is designated as the nursing leader during a specified tour of duty on a clinical bed service unit. The incumbent has the overall responsibility for the maintenance of nursing programs, activities, direction/coordination of patient care and providing direct supervision of all other nursing service employees. The Charge Nurse is accountable for assuring a safe environment for patients, staff, and others within the structure of a therapeutic milieu, and compliance with standards, policies, and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Accurately utilizes the nursing process as a tool to provide a high level of client care. Completes admission assessment according to policy and procedure.
  • Develops initial treatment plan and participates in Treatment Planning on an ongoing basis. Starts client discharge planning on admission. Assumes responsibility for implementing and/or delegating client care to appropriate ancillary staff based on client need and staff capability.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Joint Commission's Provision of Care, Treatment, and Services Standards, Medication Management Standards and CMS standards of care for Behavioral Health.
  • Works with Nurse Managers/Coordinator to create and maintain a therapeutic milieu. Provides continuity of care by communicating with and participating in treatment planning meetings. Makes appropriate decisions concerning clients, staff, and milieu management in conjunction with charge nurse/manager.
  • Foster mutual sharing of information and maintains communication between health care team. Communicates relevant information regarding clients for shift report.
  • Participates consistently in staff meetings and patient care rounds to assure continuity and consistency in management of client care. Communicates information and changes in client status or milieu issues to charge nurse/nurse manager/supervisor, medical staff, and other appropriate people. Develops and implements a plan for client/family teaching in the Aspects of Health Care that will promote health and well-being. Demonstrates knowledge of 5 Rights of Medication Administration Follows National Patient Safety Goals, policy, and procedures of the SCFMHC and Joint Commission/CMS Standards related to medication administration, transcription of orders and documentation. Narcotics and controlled drugs are counted at change of shift and/or a change in Licensed Staff. Promotes Recovery Model of Care for patients by active participation in treatment planning, group participation and discharge planning.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of CARE and ability to implement strategies to de-escalate situations CPR and AED Training is current Participates in meetings and/or committees as deemed necessary
  • Maintains safe environment for clients which provide dignity, privacy, and confidentiality at all times. Demonstrates knowledge of National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures for fire drills, evacuation per hospital policy. Responds appropriately in both medical and psychiatric emergencies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience as a staff nurse in a general/psychiatric setting.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished and the capability of staff.
  • Ability to gather information through observation, questioning, interviewing, and communicating and documenting that information.
  • Knowledge of the methods used in Employee Performance Evaluation.
  • Ability to participate in a multidisciplinary health care team.
  • Knowledge of the types and characteristics of medications used in diagnosing, treating, and controlling physical, mental and/or emotional disorders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten years full-time experience as RN
  • Four years supervisory experience

Please Note: This position is full-time 40 hours on the 3rd shift (11pm-7am ) on unit 5 east. The days off will be Week A Monday and Saturday Week B Sunday and Wednesday Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
