Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a highly skilled and dynamic RN III to join our operative and invasive services team. This role is pivotal in ensuring the highest standards of perioperative and post-anesthesia nursing care. As an RN III, you will collaborate with a dedicated healthcare team to implement the nursing process, prescribe, delegate, coordinate, and enhance patient care. You will integrate departmental and hospital missions, standards, and regulatory requirements into professional practice for a diverse client base, including those from the community, DPH, DMH, DOC, DD, or DDS. In the absence of the nurse manager, you would provide leadership and oversight, acting as a team leader/charge nurse. Your responsibilities would include assigning, supervising, and evaluating the perioperative nursing care provided by RNs, LPNs, NAs, and support staff, ensuring adherence to their scope of practice and departmental policies. Hours: Day Shift 7-3:30PM Monday-Friday

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Provide perioperative nursing care with ongoing documentation, collaborating with the healthcare team under the Nurse Manager's direction.
  • Conduct physical, psychosocial, and spiritual assessments as per unit policy.
  • Create care plans with patients, their significant others, and the healthcare team, addressing nursing diagnoses, interventions, strengths, discharge needs, and outcomes.
  • Perform and document perioperative interventions, including operative assistance and post-op care.
  • Continuously assess and evaluate patient status, treatment responses, and outcomes, and communicate changes to the patient, their significant others, and the healthcare team.
  • Record nursing care processes and outcomes according to policies and procedures.
  • Provide education and training to patients and their significant others to improve health outcomes.
  • Lead and organize care delivery, perform charge duties, and supervise other RNs, LPNs, and NAs according to department standards.
  • Participate in performance improvement and risk management by assisting in data collection, analysis, and identifying opportunities for care improvement.
  • Commit to professional growth by completing mandatory reviews and updating knowledge.

  • Foster effective interpersonal and community relations, act as an advocate/resource, and maintain patient privacy/confidentiality.

  • Demonstrate competence in perioperative nursing skills.
  • Provide age-appropriate care to all patients.
  • Offer culturally and spiritually sensitive care.
  • Use Meditech competently.

Required Qualifications:

  • Understanding of the scientific theories and principles of nursing.
  • Knowledge of data collection methods for patient assessments.
  • Applies scientific principles to performance of nursing process.
  • Ability to empathize with patients.
  • Communicates effectively through oral reporting and documentation.
  • Able to work as a team member.
  • Effectively organize work assignment and prioritize patient needs.
  • Possesses physical and mental endurance with the ability to withstand stress.
  • Knowledge of types and application of emergency medical procedures, such as Cardio-Pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). I0.
  • Establish rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds.
  • Can maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with fiber optic and specialized GI equipment.
  • Able to start intravenous phlebotomies.
  • Knowledge of special procedures.
  • Expanded knowledge of GI system pathology and diseases.
  • Competent in GI policies and procedures.
  • Goal of certification as a Gastroenterology Clinician by the A.N.A.
  • Knowledge of use of drugs used in Conscious Sedation and care of the patient with IVCS

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
