Job Description
The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking an exceptional Registered Nurse (RN III) to fill a position on second shift. The incumbent will supervise and assist in the care of patients using the standards of care and current nursing policies; is responsible for the general supervision of all subordinate nursing staff both professional and non-professional in collaboration with and in the absence of RN IV, is responsible for ongoing administrative and clinical supervision of staff as assigned. The Registered Nurse assesses the health care needs of the patients and assures their needs are met. All interactions will be person centered utilizing a person first approach with safety of all being the number one priority while acknowledging the dignity of risk. Prepares, administers and documents patient medications and treatment. Functions as a member of multidisciplinary treatment team, assume responsibility for nursing care on the inpatient unit. Maintains patient and nursing records. Follows all the standards and practices of nursing including all DMH facility and nursing policies. Accepts responsibilities and assures patient safety and supervises staff.

Please Note: This is a full-time (40 hours per week). The selected candidate will be required to work on 2nd shift from 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm. The days off are Week 1, Sunday and Wednesday and Week 2, Monday and Saturday.
Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.
Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Functions as alternate charge nurse, coordinating the delivery of quality nursing care.
- Receives 24-hour report from previous shift and assesses needs to be addressed when charge nurse is not available.
- Provides primary nursing care to psychiatric patients by assessing mental and physical health status, documents information, provide nursing treatment with ongoing adjustment according to patient's condition in cooperation with multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Meets patient nursing care needs as charge nurse or primary nurse by communicating key patient information to appropriate nursing staff in order to ensure integration, coordination and continuity of patient care.
- Prepares and administers and documents medications and treatments to help in the rehabilitation of the patient.
- Acts as leader or co-leader of patient treatment groups.
- Follows clinical nursing procedure according to Standards and Practices of Nursing as well as procedures described in the facility's, Area, and Nursing Manuals.
- Participates in the admission, discharge and transfer of patients to facilitate a smooth transition.
- Functions as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team serving as a resource person regarding patient's health issues.
- Manages and supervises nursing staff in the absence of a registered nurse of higher grade.
- Reviews nursing care plans, assessments and nursing progress notes for completion on all shifts at least weekly.
- Reviews, co-signs and oversees completion of all progress notes written by LPN or MHW.
- Oversees and instructs paraprofessional staff in the care giving of their assigned patients.
- Investigates patient and employee incidents completing written reports.
- Documents according to MHIS guidelines utilizing electronic and paper record as defined in protocols.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be registered as a nurse in Massachusetts.
- Experience in caring for the medically and mentally ill.
- Knowledge of unit management.
- Considerable knowledge of practice and theories of nursing.
- Considerable knowledge of practice and theories of psychiatric nursing.
- Ability to teach and convey oral and written instruction.
- Ability to cooperate with multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to direct professional and non-professional workers to assure patient needs.
- Ability to plan, organize and participate in reviewing and updating policies and procedures for nursing department.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Considerable knowledge of the CCICMHC nursing policies and procedures.
- Certification as Psychiatric Nurse by American Nurse Association.
- Psychiatric and acute care settings experience preferred.
- Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
