Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic GI Nurse. In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring patients undergoing IV Conscious Sedation and assisting GI Service physicians and nurses with special procedures in the ACC GI Endoscopy room, ICU, OR, and Nursing units. You will also assist in coordinating outpatient and inpatient GI consultations, as well as support the GI clinic and other clinics within the ACC. Additionally, you will help coordinate services for clients from the Department of Correction (DOC), Department of Mental Health (DMH), and the community. This position requires a collaborative approach to ensure comprehensive care and support for all patients.

Hours: Day Shift 7-3:30PM Monday-Friday

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Assesses, monitors, and discharges patients with IV Conscious Sedation in GI, X-ray, and OPD.
  • Collaborates with medical staff to prepare patients for procedures with IVCS.
  • Provides emergent care during invasive procedures for acutely ill GI patients in ICU.
  • Performs phlebotomies.
  • Acts as GI Charge Nurse in their absence.
  • Schedules inpatient and outpatient procedures for the Endoscopy Room.
  • Provides direct patient care during GI special procedures, monitoring pre-op, intra-op, and post-op phases.
  • Maintains and cares for endoscopy equipment and supplies.
  • Collaborates with DMH and DOC facilities to ensure continuity of GI patient care.
  • Acts as a contact person for GI service referrals.
  • Conducts patient and family teaching.
  • Assists in GI clinic and other OPD clinics as assigned.
  • Commits to professional growth through ongoing education and participation in professional organizations.
  • Contributes to departmental and hospital-wide performance improvement activities.
  • Functioning as patient advocate and resource person to staff, patients, families, visitors and outside agencies and always maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Contributing to the safety/risk management/infection control program by assessing and overseeing the environment to reduce safety and health hazards and minimizing accidents.
  • Overseeing services, supplies, pharmaceutical stock and equipment to ensure effective and economical use.
  • Demonstrates competence in assessing and providing age-appropriate care to all patients.
  • Demonstrates competence in assessing and providing care that is cognizant of and sensitive to patients' cultural and spiritual needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Understand scientific principles in nursing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with fiber optic and specialized GI equipment.
  • Able to start intravenous phlebotomies.
  • Knowledge of special procedures.
  • Expanded knowledge of GI system pathology and diseases.
  • Competent in GI policies and procedures.
  • Goal of certification as a Gastroenterology Clinician by the A.N.A.
  • Knowledge of use of drugs used in Conscious Sedation and care of the patient with IVCS

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
