Job Description

Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse III.

The Charge Nurse assists in assuring that all patient care is consistent with the Hospital's mission, with the philosophy of nursing; objectives for patient care, and standards of care/practice as identified by Nursing Administration. The Charge Nurse develops implements and maintains a therapeutic milieu which is demonstrated through nursing leadership of clinical practice, supervision of patients and staff and education.

Our ideal candidate will have one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

Please Note: This is a Full Time 40-hour position with the following schedule:

  • Unit C1 on 2nd shift from 2:45 PM-11:15 PM with Week 1: Sunday/Thursday & Week 2: Tuesday/Saturday as days off.

Employees in this position will be required to work mandatory overtime.

Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Treats all patients with dignity and respect through interactions which affirm the individual's needs and preferences and by optimally integrating the patient perspective into all facets of care; will advocate for patients, Facilitate timely resolution of patient concerns and assist patients in the exercise of their rights.
  • Provides documented clinical supervision and feedback to nursing personnel of a lower grade on a regular basis and evaluates individual work performance on an ongoing basis through observation and other appropriate methods.
  • Delivers direct care and oversees the clinical nursing activities of that unit.
  • Responsible for verbal and written communication and direction between nursing shifts including clinical information and relevant Hospital operations communications.
  • Attends and participates in nursing unit rounds, Treatment Team meetings, and nursing unit staff meetings while facilitating a collaborative professional relationship with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintains working knowledge of JCAHO accreditation, CMS, DMH and Hospital standards and communicates standards to staff within the context of nursing activities and job performance.
  • Encourages staff to maintain compliance with Hospital and Departmental policies related to mandatory education including fire and safety, universal precautions, emergency procedures, CPR, human rights, restraint/seclusion, complaint reporting and other related topics.
  • Administers ordered medications and treatments accurately and safely following nursing procedures to ensure optimal therapeutic value.
  • Patient health information will be communicated/documented according to DMH and WRCH Standards including documenting and reading MHIS medical Records as required ensuring patient's health information is current and accurate.
  • Insures the maintenance of an adequate inventory of prescribed medications and treatment supplies on the nursing unit and that the storage of all medications is consistent with Hospital, regulatory and accreditation standards. Collaborate with the Pharmacy on issues relative to this practice area.
  • Responds to psychiatric and medical emergency situations with competence/skill.
  • Actively participates in Hospital and department committees and task forces and contributes to the development of Nursing Practice goals.
  • Maintains competency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), non-violent strategies and definitions (NVSD), network computer use and MHIS and specific nursing unit competency standards.

Required Qualifications

  • One (1) year experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, techniques, safety practices and medical terminology/abbreviations.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining staff training needs and providing or arranging for such training; and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.
  • Ability to prepare statistical reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Talent for providing written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Capacity to participate in inter-disciplinary health care teams.
  • Skilled in establishing rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural, economic backgrounds, and/or under physical, emotional stress, or in stressful settings.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts and/or irregular hours/weekends, holidays, nights.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Meditech & Meta experience, CPR and IV certification.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with individuals, families, providers, physicians and staff members.
  • Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience working with individuals with serious, persistent mental illness
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.
  • American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Prior experience working with adolescent population

About Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH):
Located on over 20 acres in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) is part of an integrated network of effective, efficient, and culturally competent mental health services. It provides intermediate and long-term inpatient care for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who live in Massachusetts, as well as individuals requiring specialized court ordered evaluations.

WRCH provides inpatient services to 290 adults and 30 adolescents, inclusive of a Deaf Inpatient Mental Health Service program for 10 patients.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
