Job Description

These positions will be assigned to facilities throughout the Southern Sector of the Department of Correction to include

Norfolk, Bridgewater, Roslindale, Plymouth, and Walpole

Duties:

Inspect equipment and related materials to ensure efficient and safe operation. Performs preventive maintenance. May train and/or supervise a work detail of incarcerated individuals in performing general work within the institution. Construct and maintain buildings and related structure applying carpentry and painting techniques using carpentry tools to reconstruct, alter, repair and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, etc: interpret and/or draw sketches or layouts of work to be done. The ability to use hand and power tools in a wide variety of maintenance repair activities in a correctional institution. Performs all landscaping duties as required. Performs snow removal along with sanding and salting as required. Ensure that all duties are carried out as directed in a professional and timely manner. Performs other duties as assigned.

SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL HAVE TO SUCCESSFULLY PASS

A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION, DRUG SCREENING,

OSHA RESPIRATOR MEDICAL EVALUATION AND BACKGROUND

AND MUST ATTEND A FOUR (4) WEEK RECRUIT ACADEMY


Preferred Qualifications:

Work experience in Commercial/Industrial maintenance repairs. Extensive knowledge in and safe use of all phases of power and hand tools. Experience in the following fields: Masonry (Brick wall repairs and block construction), Welding and Fabricating, Roof Structures: (slate repairs, rubber membrane and asphalt), Carpentry: (Floor systems, window repairs, drywall construction, conventional framing, ceramic/laminate tile installation/repairs), Landscaping: (commercial mowers, chainsaws and related equipment, fence repair and installation), Snow Removal: (vehicle mounted plow operation, Snowblowers, Front end loader and sand). Availability for emergencies after normal working hours. Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints, etc. Ability to plan and conduct training or instruction. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression. Ability to give written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner. Ability to deal tactfully with others. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

Comments:

This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Please note that salaries for union positions are determined according to the provisions of the respective collective bargaining agreement. Applicants must have no felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609. The Massachusetts Department of Correction shall not hire anyone who may have direct contact with offenders, who has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents. The DOC urges bi-lingual applicants to apply.
