Job Description
Tewksbury Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced HVAC Mechanic II professional who will be responsible for installation, routine maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems and refrigeration equipment including related equipment. The selected candidate performs preventative maintenance on all equipment and maintains all HVAC and refrigeration equipment in proper operating order.
Please note: This position is full-time, 40 hours per week working 1st shift. The schedule will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The days off will be Saturday and Sunday.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

- Installs heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures such as air and water filters and piping used by refrigeration.
- Maintains, repairs, and completes preventative maintenance on various types of HVAC equipment including but not limited to, window A/C units, fan cooled chilled water units, split systems, various size steam absorbers, cooling towers, Fan Coil Units, air handlers, and pneumatic controls.
- Maintains, repairs and completes preventative maintenance on various types of refrigeration units including but not limited to, refrigerators, walk-in coolers, ice machines, and chilled water units for drinking water.
- Provides repairs and preventative maintenance on various types of heating systems, exhaust systems, ventilation systems, and make-up air handler units.
- Verifies equipment for malfunctions by observing pressure and vacuum gauges and other indicators, adjusting controls, testing joints and connections for gas leaks, by using testing equipment such as voltmeters, ohmmeters, amprobes, etc. to ensure proper operation.
- Maintains, rebuilds, and replaces worn or defective parts, replacing and/or reclaiming specified gases or fluids into systems, by lubricating motors and bearings, etc.
- Handles both open and closed water systems such as cooling towers by adding algercides to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria
- Performs other related work such as pipe fitting, pipe threading, soldering and brazing of joints, installation of compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, belt replacement, motors, air filters, and circulating fans
- Orders, maintains, and inventories various supplies and equipment associated with heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration work.
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of the standard preventative maintenance procedures for heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning systems, and related electrical systems
- Familiarity with the methods for lubricating machinery and equipment, including care and maintenance of small hand tools and power tools.
- Experience with the safety practices and procedures followed in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning, and electrical systems.
- Skilled in the use of the terminology, coding, symbols, and standard abbreviations used in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning, and related electrical systems.
- Capacity to work effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
- Talent for establishing rapport and maintain harmonious working relationships with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in a hospital and/or campus setting working with multiple disciplines and vendors.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Education toward such a certificate or diploma will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Special Requirements: Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License may be required.
