Job Description

The Department of Mental Health, Brockton Multi-Service Center is seeking an experienced Environmental Service Specialist II.

Please Note: The selected candidate will work on the day shift, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The days off are Saturday and Sunday.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive):

• Coordinates and supervises the activities of the Environmental Services Department to ensure effective operations and compliance with established protocols/procedures.

• Makes frequent inspection tours of building to determine cleanliness; completes audit tool; assigns staff to extra duty assignments and daily work assignments, examines completed work to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and set schedules.

• Works with the Facilities Director, or designee, to assure the Environment of Care standards related to Environmental Services are met and maintained.

• Maintains inventory and control over supplies and material and ensures proper storage; assists in ordering supplies by completing supply request forms.

• Assists supervisor in the following duties: receiving of incoming goods; dispensing and delivery of supplies throughout the Center and State Residential Group Living Environments; maintains clean and organized supply closets.

• Cleans floors, walls, elevators, restroom facilities in main areas, office areas and patient areas by utilizing approved custodial equipment such as disinfectants, cleaners, multi-purpose steam cleaner, auto-scrubber, and by using approved techniques to cleans walls, floors, fixtures and furnishings in living spaces, offices, bathrooms to maintain a clean and therapeutic environment, as directed. Uses proper procedure to perform emergency clean-up as needed for safety of clients and staff.

• Checks soap, hand sanitizer and mask dispensers; removes empty containers and replenishes stock as needed.

• Strips wax off floors with stripper; rinses and then applies wax and sealer as needed utilizing necessary equipment.

• Moves and relocates furniture/equipment for better utilization of space; setting up furniture in rooms for special functions or meetings; loading or unloading equipment and supplies from vehicles.

• Removes trash from premises for general collection or recycling on a daily basis, disinfecting receptacles as needed (i.e. paper towel holder, soap dispenser, trash can, etc.); replenishes paper goods as needed.

• Sweeps, washes, and disinfects stairwells assigned on a weekly basis.

• Actively participates in the orientation of new employees.

• Trains Environmental Services Staff and has SDS (safety data sheets) available.

• Communicates with individuals/clients, on an as-needed basis, appropriate to age, cultural or spiritual needs, by referring or directing individuals to the proper personnel/agency.

• Updates Facilities Director regarding ongoing projects, problems, etc.

• Works cooperatively with other employees in the Department.

• Other related duties as assigned.

• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to the age related and cultural needs of the

• clients/patients served.

• Engages in professional, courteous behavior with co-workers and, as necessary, clients of the Center.

• Attends mandatory classes as offered by Staff Development; reviews policies and procedures to ensure adherence to State and Center guidelines.

  • Knowledge of the types and uses of materials and equipment used in institutional housekeeping.
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, safety practices and procedures followed in institutional housekeeping.
  • Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates' training needs, and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action; and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.

The Brockton Multi Service Center provides comprehensive services to mentally ill adults and children. Programs include Outpatient, Case Management, ACCS, and PACT team. The Brockton Multi service Center is a Joint Commission certified facility. Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in building custodial or institutional housekeeping work.
