About the Chelsea Veterans Home:

The Veterans Home at Chelsea is a state-funded, fully accredited health care facility that offers veterans quality health care, including full-time residential accommodations, and provides educational and social services for veterans in the Commonwealth. The Veterans Home is staffed by approximately 330+ administrators, clinicians, nurses, certified nursing assistants, skilled trade, dietary staff, housekeeping staff, contractors, consultants, and general administrative personnel. The Home addresses the needs of a wide variety of veterans, including 24/7 care and treatment for terminal illness to the provision of residential, social, and educational services. Comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical services are provided to these veterans in need. The patient population is generally categorized into the following categories: Alzheimer/Long Term Care; Domiciliary (residential). The tradition of service to the veterans of Massachusetts is surpassed only by a continued commitment to excellence in care for those who are in need now and in the future. The Veterans Home at Chelsea, a place dedicated to providing exceptional care to our nation's veterans, is currently seeking candidates to fill open Janitor positions. It is a position that demands dedication, a keen eye for detail, and a proactive approach to maintaining cleanliness and safety within our facility. As the Janitor, you will oversee the transformation of assigned areas, ensuring they remain clean, orderly, and devoid of any potential hazards. Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Keeps buildings in clean and orderly condition by performing a combination of activities including cleaning assigned areas and making minor repairs to buildings using hand tools and equipment.

• Maintains the cleanliness and appearance of floors by sweeping and mopping and by utilizing building custodial equipment such as polishers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and carpet shampooers.

• Washes interior surfaces of buildings such as walls, ceilings, windows, furniture, shower chairs, fans, shower trolleys, walkers, beds, bedside tables, over bed tables, mechanical wheelchairs, vents etc. using appropriate supplies and equipment.

• Responds to emergencies such as spills or floods and assists in clean-up.

• Empties waste and recycling receptacles and transports contents to appropriate areas.

• Cleans toilets, lavatories, utility rooms, laundry rooms, patient rooms, dining rooms, elevators, offices etc. using appropriate supplies and equipment.

• Transports soiled linen to holding area and transports clean and dirty laundry to appropriate areas.

• Removes and re-hangs window draperies and bed side curtains.

• Operates elevators to pick-up and deliver clothing, laundry, equipment, etc.

• Maintains grounds around buildings by cutting grass, raking leaves, weeding, and thinning flower beds or gardens etc.

• Performs outside duties such as washing windows, sweeping walks, shoveling snow and ice from walks/stairs/ramps and fire escapes, picking up trash.

• Performs related duties such as loading or unloading equipment and supplies from vehicles, moving furniture, setting up furniture and assemble furniture such as beds, desks, and cabinets etc.

• Attend departmental training, annual orientation, safety training etc. as required.

• This position requires walking and standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting, and carrying heavy objects, working outdoors or indoors in all types of weather, working under conditions of hazard, such as slippery or wet floors. (Janitor I's may be required to work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, or nights.)

• Other duties as assigned.

EMERGENCY: This position has been deemed as an emergency personnel position. During a declared State of Emergency and in Non-Emergency situations/adverse weather, it will be necessary to report to work.

• Six months to one year of janitorial experience.
