Duties:
Based on assignment, employees in this series provide non-therapeutic counseling, rehabilitation, or custodial care and treatment to incarcerated individuals; perform classification duties; interview incarcerated individuals; obtain incarcerated individual criminal histories through correspondence with other Law Enforcement agencies such as the Criminal Justice Information System and the FBI, from institution and court records, and from personal observation; facilitate, collect and analyze assessment information; counsel incarcerated individuals on programming and placement recommendations available in accordance with established placement criteria and individual needs; and describe, explain, or answer inquiries regarding institutional rules, regulations, policies, procedures, programming, custody levels, classification, and institutional placement. Employees in this series shall perform Re-Entry duties: obtaining information and completing all required data entry on IMS relevant to incarcerated individual work history, programming, treatment, education, community resources and successful release; transport all released incarcerated individuals to regional re-entry sites; perform evaluations, employee initiative reports and program needs assessments; upon release, will identify those individuals who are required to register as Sex Offenders and shall initiate the Registration process. As a liaison to the Parole Board, employees will attend Parole hearings, provide incarcerated individual criminal history, and will provide a summary of evaluative information to the Parole Board. Based on assignment, Employees in this series also maintain custodial care and control of incarcerated individuals, patrol correctional facilities, supervise community work crews; observe incarcerated individual conduct and behavior; investigate suspicious incarcerated individual activity, and respond to emergencies.

All applicants under consideration will be subject to a physical abilities test, psychological test, drug test, submit to a full background check and be required to have a medical form filled out by your physician before entering a twelve (12) week Recruit Academy.
Candidates must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment.
Working conditions:
Correctional Program Officers may work in a correctional facility, alone in an isolated area; may work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, or nights and are subject to a standby (on call) work status; may be subjected to verbal and physical abuse from others; may be required to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress; stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; are subject to injury from firearms; may work under exposure to adverse weather conditions; may travel for job-related purposes; and may be required to furnish private transportation for reimbursable job-related travel.

This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Please note that salaries for union positions are determined according to the provisions of the respective collective bargaining agreement. Applicants must have no felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609. The Massachusetts Department of Correction shall not hire anyone who may have direct contact with offenders, who has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents. The DOC urges bi-lingual applicants to apply.
Qualifications
First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in counseling, guidance, criminal justice, or social work that included counseling and/or rehabilitation of criminal offenders, inmates, or prisoners.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
- A Bachelor's or higher degree in sociology, psychology, counseling, criminal justice, law enforcement, law, criminology or social work may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.
- A Bachelor's degree in a field other than social work, psychology, counseling, criminal justice, law enforcement, law, or criminology may be substituted for one year of the required experience on the basis of two years of education for six months of experience.
- A Master's or higher degree in a field other than social work, psychology, counseling, criminal justice, law enforcement, law, or criminology may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
- One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
LICENSES:
A current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license or the equivalent from another state may be required.
