The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, seeks applicants for the position of Contracted Student Intern - Environmental Justice Communities Brownfields Project to perform the following duties:

MassDEP EJ Communities Brownfields Project

This internship is designed to support MassDEP's Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup (BWSC) ongoing Brownfields support with a focus on the Western Massachusetts Environmental Justice (EJ) Communities. This is an exciting project which concentrates MassDEP resources and those of our interdisciplinary partners in Environmental Justice (EJ) and/or Low Population (LP) (less than 10,000 people/populated) communities in WERO (Western Regional Office). The objective of the EJ Communities Brownfield Project is to improve quality of life issues as they are related to environmental conditions, identify underutilized properties for environmental assessment needs for potential State or Federal funding, as well as identify key community members for future redevelopment planning. The goal of the internship is to identify and characterize Brownfield sites in EJ Communities that can be identified through database review and site inspections as potential areas for growth/economic development. The selected intern will help develop and review a comprehensive list of Brownfields site that will include site details (location, size, ownership, area receptors, historic use, environmental conditions, etc.) that can be mapped and stored on an internal database and eventually uploaded to MassDEP's website. The intern will also potentially analyze assessment data, write a final report, and help develop materials for environmental education to neighborhood groups.

The intern will have five basic roles as listed below.
  1. Process and track purchases and invoices.
  2. Reconcile documents, records, and transactions to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.
  3. Perform related duties such as supporting operations management, maintaining records, and preparing reports..
  4. Interact with internal and external stakeholders to exchange information and/or to resolve problems.
  5. Perform other administrative duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to gather information and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of data, to draw conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to communicate confidently and effectively on the telephone, in person, and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare charts, graphs, and tables.
  • Ability to understand and apply the regulations, policies, and procedures governing assigned activities.
  • Ability to establish rapport with others.
  • Ability to meet established or changing program requirements.
  • Ability to work independently, and in an organized manner with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software.
