Job Description
The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking to hire an intern who will support its Investigations Division in Central Office Boston.
This project involves collaboration with multiple teams to ensure that RL6 (DMH online incident/complaint reporting system) records are accurate, up to date, and properly integrated for efficient data processing and analysis. The intern will also participate in the Data Science Program at DMH (DSPD) to develop research and analytical skills.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Undergo training on RL6 Report Center functionality (training will be provided).
- Develop QA queries to identify missing or incorrect information.
- Clean and update records flagged by the QA queries.
- Communicate with the OOI team and Community/Inpatient teams to resolve data discrepancies.
- Maintain an up-to-date data dictionary, ensuring consistent documentation of RL6 and SLS data fields.
- Support the SLS migration project by contributing to the development of guidelines and best practices.
- Assist in statewide reporting and analysis of incident data.
- Generate insights and findings for Leadership consideration.
- Participation in the Data Science Program at DMH (DSPD)
- Attend weekly DSPD sessions.
- Complete weekly DSPD assignments.
- Develop a research project under supervision
- Work on the research project for final presentation

Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic proficiency in SQL or other query languages for QA queries and data validation or willingness to learn.
- Understanding of data integrity principles and experience with data cleaning.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, Excel Pivot Tables) or willingness to learn.
- Willingness to learn incident reporting systems.
- Attention to detail in identifying data errors and inconsistencies.
- Critical thinking skills to improve data management and reporting.
- Ability to maintain an up-to-date data dictionary.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and reporting.
- Ability to work with cross-functional teams (Office of Investigations team, Data Analytics team, Community/Inpatient teams).
- Interest in conducting research projects and presenting findings.
- Organizational skills to meet deadlines and participate in weekly DSPD sessions.
Period of Service: May 27, 2025 through August 29, 2025
Additional Information:
- Benefits are unavailable with the exception of sick leave accruals.
- All employees will be paid on a biweekly basis and must have direct deposit.
- The salary for this position is $19 an hour.
- Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Days Off: Saturday and Sunday

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
