Job Description:

The Head of Commercial Risk & Controls Governance helps to provide oversight and governance to the Commercial Bank. This role is responsible for leading teams with accountability for audit remediation, quality assurance, credit policy origination and general project management goals.

Depth & Scope:

  • Provides people management leadership by hiring the best talent, setting goals, developing staff, managing employee performance and compensation decisions, promoting teamwork and handling any/all disciplinary actions, as required
  • Provides oversight and governance to the Commercial Bank
  • Responsible for leading teams with accountability for audit remediation, quality assurance, credit policy origination and general project management goals
  • Works with Senior Management of Commercial Bank and Risk Management to ensure key risk items are addressed and effective controls are in place while at the same time facilitating achievement of Business Line objectives
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive understanding of the technical and business aspects of Commercial Lending, Risk Management, Commercial Operations and Credit Policy in order to effectively manage various initiatives and resources
  • Creates and maintains Key Risk Indicators for Regional Commercial Banking and monitors Key Risk Indicators from core business partners, escalating issues to senior management as needed
  • Coordinates and supervises ongoing quality assurance testing program to evaluate business line control effectiveness
  • Works with impacted parties to initiate action plans to resolve identified control breakdowns within acceptable timeframes
  • Establishes oversight of business line risk controls and periodically evaluates risk mitigation efforts to assess effectiveness and make adjustments as risk/business goals change
  • Supports the businesses on risk program execution; Assists in the identification, assessment and resolution efforts as necessary; Promotes a strong risk management culture and ensures adequate risk ownership
  • Acts as senior advisor to executive business management; Consults on control recommendations and requirements around new initiatives or business changes; Advises business on risk and control mitigation strategies

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Advanced degree preferred
  • Professional certification preferred (i.e. CPA, CIA, CFA)
  • 12+ Years of related experience in Banking with focus in Internal Audit, Loan Review,
  • Regulatory, Compliance, Risk Management, and/or Quality Assurance areas is preferred
  • Commercial Banking, Project Management, Audit, and/or similar experience preferred
  • Management experience and employee development skills and experience required
  • PC Skills/Experience (MS Office Suite, Visio) required
  • Demonstrates outstanding communication skills, strategic agility and strong business, control and risk management subject matter expertise
  • Exhibits strong decision-making abilities and follows through on assigned tasks
  • Possesses high level analytical skills and the ability to think strategically as well as tactically
  • Exhibits excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Exhibits superior relationship management skills, including the ability to mediate in difficult situations and influence outcomes in a respectful, professional and effective manner
  • Works well independently and in team environment
  • Exhibits willingness to travel to oversee/manage/lead team members and/or Business Line contacts throughout the company footprint
  • Consistently exhibits professionalism and sound judgment
