Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our Law Team as Counsel!

About the role

Counsel will act as a legal and strategic advisor to Symetra's Workforce Benefits division. This position requires a solid foundation of law and regulation pertaining to group life, health and disability insurance products and coverage; experience with state family and medical laws, also a plus. Attorney will support product development and claims and will oversee day-to-day legal matters, working closely with senior attorneys as well as claims and compliance professionals.

What you'll do in this role

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with business leaders in Symetra's Workforce Benefits division to gain the context and knowledge necessary to effectively provide legal guidance and deliver problem-solving strategies.
  • Provide legal advice on all aspects of the group life, health and disability insurance business including policy language, underwriting, pricing, distribution, claims, billing and operational issues. NOTE: This position does not have corporate litigation responsibilities but does involve providing counseling to claims personnel.
  • Interact with cross-functional teams to understand current and prospective business practices, advise on legal, regulatory and reputational risks associated with such practices, and proactively recommend enhancements to address or mitigate identified risks.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of laws and regulations including ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, ACA, FMLA, and state family and medical leave laws.
  • Collaborate with compliance professionals and provide legal review, advice, drafting, and negotiation assistance for a range of business contracts focused on Workforce Benefits' products and services.
  • Interact with state insurance regulators to resolve issues and meet company objectives.

Compensation

Salary Range: $117,900 - $196,500 plus eligibility for the company annual bonus program.

Requirements

Your education, experience, and skills

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and member of a state bar.
  • 3 to 6 years of overall experience, ideally with legal experience with a law firm and/or corporate legal department, preferably in or supporting the insurance industry.
  • Subject matter knowledge from the following areas preferred: individual or group insurance, life, health and disability insurance products and coverage, ERISA (as it applies to health and welfare plans), and state family and medical leave laws.
