Position Objective
The Automation and Controls Engineer position is responsible for ideation, development, implementation and management of Operations Technology Departmental projects. Heavy in project management, mechanical and system engineering, this role should be able to manage complicated and high cost CAPEX projects. Developing equipment and systems for safety, reliability, manufacturability and maintainability are critical factors of the success of this role.
Primary Responsibilities
- Directly involved with all Operations Technology Department builds, checkouts, and troubleshooting.
- Research, design & build production and development equipment solutions.
- Act as project manager for contract-built projects.
- Create electrical schematics for new instrumentation.
- Develop systems with a preventative maintenance program.
- Address physical installation issues and wear/tear/corrosion of equipment components.
- Write procedures to address both routine tasks as well as off-nominal troubleshooting steps.
- Provide innovative solutions to special requirements and challenges faced by the team, which can range from specialized equipment to reduce safety risk, minimize defects, streamlined labor efficiencies or building towards a "factory of the future" strategy.
- Perform basic electrical and mechanical installations.

Secondary Responsibilities
- Actively participate in team meetings, business reviews and strategic sessions as a subject matter expert from the Operations Technology Department.
- Perform project revies throughout the lifecycle of assigned initiatives.
- Manage cost and schedule for assigned projects
- Submit financial justification (ROI) though CAPEX request submittals.
- Participate in benchmarking, brainstorming, ideation, research to support annual strategic budget towards technology growth.
- Able to manage external resources, like contractors, to complete scope of works.
- Ability to manage multiple critical projects simultaneously.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical, or automation engineering discipline
- 1+ years of experience with automation or systems
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience in the following fields: robotics, automotive, aircraft, marine, autonomous vehicles, RF or communication systems, power plant or chemical process type industrial systems
- Able to collaborate with a wide range of people and effectively work in a team
- Able to perform in a high-pressure, dynamic environment
- Able to juggle a multitude of tasks simultaneously
- Able to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere
- Sound verbal and written communication skills
- Enjoys field work and getting hands dirty
- Experience working at a rocket launch facility and supporting launch campaigns
- Proficient in Python, SQL, HTML, Java, and MS Excel
- Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC)
- Lean, Continuous Improvement, 6 Sigma Experience is preferred.
Travel Requirement
< 10% - Possible vendor or contractor site visits or trade show trips
