Position Description

Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Reliability Supervisor, the Process Control Technician is primarily responsible for maintaining the systems instrumentation with limited interruption to the plant's production requirements. The Process Control Technician programs the central control systems and associated equipment and provides technical assistance to the Electricians and works closely with production in perfecting trends, reporting, control, alarms and displays. The Process Control Technician is also responsible for setting a high standard for safety, quality, housekeeping, productivity, and performance for all plant associates.

Responsibilities include:

  • Optimize and maintain plant PLC systems and plant control instruments
  • Optimize and maintain the Human Machine Interface (HMI) and all connected instruments, working closely with Production, perfecting trends, reporting, control, alarms and displays
  • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for systems and process systems
  • Provide technical support and knowledge to hourly Maintenance/Electrical Technicians in an effort to reduce costs and improve efficiency
  • Ensure conformance with Automation, IT and corporation guidelines
  • Successfully implement assigned capital projects in a timely manner and within budget constraints
  • Actively involved in production issues to establish groundwork for continuous improvement
  • Promote new upgrades and features to improve and assist plant performance
  • Maintain inventory levels of spare parts for process control equipment
  • Create and maintain a good working relationship with internal customers
  • Responsible for safety compliance
  • Interacts with managers and supervisors at plant to secure appropriate resources to plan and implement controls projects.
  • Participates in Area Improvement teams to resolve critical process and production problems with customers and vendors.
  • Assist hourly Maintenance/Electrical Technicians in troubleshooting issues.
  • Analyzes operating problems, develops solutions and leads the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Prepares and maintains data sheets, wiring and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and flow charts required for the proper and efficient operation of plant equipment.
  • Communicate with Maintenance Planners & Maintenance Supervisors on daily activities and work priorities to ensure material availability for job plans.
  • Actively participate in plant safety programs and maintain a knowledge and understanding of Process Safety Management, OSHA requirements, and other safety standards.
  • Proficient in the use of the CMMS Systems.
  • Take an active role in other plant support activities, such as safety, quality and energy conservation.
  • Other duties include problem analysis, technical support for internal computer systems, and daily interaction in support of Operations and Maintenance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2-3 years of Automation or Controls related experience (Electrical, Computer, Chemical or other Engineering/Technical degree is an asset), or a minimum of 5 years of Automation or Controls related experience (includes relevant intern, co-op, or basic work experience).
  • Technical expertise of various DCS, PLC (Allen Bradley RSLogix 5000 preferred), HMI/SCADA (I-Fix) and other applicable systems. Extensive experience with PLC programming is a must.
  • Deep understanding and experience with all components involved in process architecture from end devices to control room servers.
  • Knowledge and experience with various control systems architecture (Control Net, Device Net).
  • Knowledge and experience with Variable Frequency Drives, Servo Drives.
  • Knowledge and experience with various analog sensors and transmitters (pressure, temperature, load cells).
  • Knowledge of FANUK Roots is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with power distribution systems.
  • Proficient at reading and interpreting technical documentation (schematics, loop sheets, manuals, technical bulletins etc.).
  • Must be able to work shift work (specifically over-night) after-hour, weekends and holidays when necessary.
