Raytheon Technologies Research Center (RTRC) develops new technologies that enable the most innovative products in the world. The next generation of products demand that we cross traditional boundaries. If you enjoy leveraging your technical expertise in system exploration across disciplines, our Thermodynamic Systems Team needs your skills. Our Senior Research Engineer position demands strong engineering fundamentals, expertise in analytical and numerical physics-based modeling, and the ability to select appropriate modeling fidelity for a given problem.

What You Will Do:

  • modeling and analysis of novel systems for next generation engine design, space propulsion, undersea propulsion, waste heat recovery, power generation, and cooling
  • military operations analysis and commercial product utilization simulations
  • exploration methods for large design spaces across aerospace and defense system domains
  • application of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques (algebraic, topological, deep learning)
  • implementation of novel optimization and uncertainty quantification methods
  • controls and transient co-design approaches
  • system demonstrations build and test
  • and much more!

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical, Nuclear Engineering or a related discipline is required with a minimum of 5+ years of work experience or a Master's Degree with 2+ years or Ph.D.
  • We will consider Ph.D. candidates with no formal experience. M.S. candidates must have 2+ year of experience in a relevant work environment
  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.
  • Analytic modeling and programming skills in common languages
  • Demonstrated experience in publishing and presenting research

  • Adaptability and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication skills, informal and formal presentation skills, and ability to foster positive relationships with internal and external partners
  • Ability to manage uncertain requirements, formulate a problem from ill-defined needs, develop approaches to solve problems, and recognize when additional subject matter expertise is needed
  • Experience developing externally funded programs with relevance to a particular research agenda
  • Background in military operations analysis and wargaming

Work Location

East Hartford, CT. This is an on-site/in-person role. Due to the nature of the experimental testing, flexible scheduling and multi-shift test support will be required.

This role is also eligible for the Re-Empower Program. The Re-Empower Program helps support talented and committed professionals as they rebuild their capabilities, enhance leadership skills, and continue their professional journey. Over the course of the 14-week program, experienced professionals will gain paid, on-the-job experience, have an opportunity to participate in sessions with leadership, develop personalized plans for success and receive coaching to guide their return-to-work experience. Upon completion of the program, based on performance and contributions participants will be eligible for a career at RTX.

Minimum Program Qualifications:

To qualify for the RTX, Re-Empower Program, candidates should:

  • Be on a career break of one or more year at time of application
  • Have prior experience in functional area of interest
  • Have interest in returning in either a full-time or part-time position

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
