The Raytheon Mechanical Engineering (ME) Organization leads the mechanical hardware design, development and production support of a wide breadth of air, land, sea, and space systems. Within the ME Organization, the Undersea, Sensors & Structures (USS) Department leads the mechanical design, development, and integration of a diverse set of products, including but not limited to undersea sensors and analysis, naval platforms, shipboard/ground-based processing and power equipment, and launchers.

The USS department is looking for a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer, located in the Raytheon facility in Portsmouth, RI or Mystic, CT, and may require some travel between Raytheon and customer sites.

What You Will Do

  • Design, prototype, test, and troubleshoot undersea sensors, sensor array systems and supporting electronics. Focus areas will include transducer/sensor design, supporting acoustic research and acoustic analysis, material selection, and fabrication method selection
  • Collaborate across multiple disciplines/functions (i.e. structural/thermal analyses and electrical engineering) to solve complex technical challenges in a fast-paced, team environment
  • Validate acoustic sensor design functionality and performance by rapid prototyping and/or simulation
  • Support the factory and suppliers with product integration and test
  • Support technically challenging programs that collaborate with customer assembled teams with the development of new sensor solutions for emerging technologies
  • Participate in design peer reviews, resolve action items, and conduct trade studies to make sound technical decisions
  • Occasional CONUS travel to customer sites or suppliers is generally required. International and longer duration travel assignments are available but optional

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in the research, development, engineering design, analysis, prototype, test, and troubleshoot of undersea sensors, sensor array systems and supporting electronics.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve difficult problems while working as part of a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with 3-D modeling software or acoustic sensor analysis tools
  • Experience with configuration management systems.
  • Task Leadership experience.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience in packaging electronic equipment and sensors in undersea applications and have demonstrated success at designing to meet the physical and environmental challenges associated with an underwater ocean environment. Specific knowledge of sealing techniques, material selection for corrosion performance, pressure housing design, undersea structures, and undersea cabling is preferred.
  • Experience on DoD programs.
  • Experience developing an acoustic sensor system from a newly developed requirements baseline
  • Experience in structural acoustic analysis, experimentation methods and acoustic test planning, as well as the design and performance assessment of noise control solutions.


  • Proficiency with MATLAB


  • Experience with PTC CREO and PDM.


  • Experience with ANSI/ASME Y14.5 GD&T and development of engineering drawing.
  • Experience managing financial and schedule performance of mechanical tasking.
  • Working knowledge of Military and Commercial Specifications.

Required Education (including Major): Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering required, MS is preferred.

Clearance Requirements: Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearence required, Top Secret Security Clearance preferred

The salary range for this role is 82,000 USD - 164,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
