Principal Project Engineer - EMU Program (Onsite)

RTX's Collins Aerospace is one of the world's largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. Space Systems is a business unit within Collins and our products reside in deep space, low earth orbit, and on the ground. We are also a major supplier to international space programs. The Space Systems business has contributed to significant advances in ground, air, space and imaging technology for over 85 years. Within Space Systems we design and manufacture Environmental Control and Life Support Systems on the International Space Station (ISS) and other vehicles, including the space suit. The official name of the space suit used to maintain the ISS is Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU).

Collins is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join us as EMU (or 'Space Suit') Project Engineer. You will need to combine project management skills with detailed technical intellect to lead Integrated Product Development Team projects that maintain and equip space suits for tours on the International Space Station (ISS), and support ground training of astronauts for Extra-Vehicular Activities (EVAs) commonly known as spacewalks. As an EMU Project Engineer you will help make it possible for crewmembers to go into space vacuum to maintain and upgrade the International Space Station. You will plan and manage projects to design, purchase, fabricate, refurbish, assemble and test components of the EMU life support system.

What You Will Do:

  • Planning, proposing and executing space flight hardware projects.
  • Managing/Coordinating Certification Activities for hardware upgrades
  • Controlling team activity, scope, and schedule.
  • Managing and controlling cost accounts
  • Conducting project kickoff, design, and status reviews
  • Resolving design, procurement, assembly, test, and delivery challenges
  • Coordinating and leading multi-function teams, leading team meetings and driving action items to closure
  • Initiating and coordinating engineering changes
  • Conducting root cause investigations

This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), technical experience, and the ability to work as a cross-functional team leader. Direct communication with customers, primarily NASA, will be required at times. You will manage projects that produce components which meet stringent operating requirements and provide extraordinarily high reliability.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor's degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required
  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • BA/BS degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering required, w/ 8+ years of experience.
  • MA/MS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or MBA degree w/ 7 + years of experience
  • Project management skills
  • Prior experience in related Engineering disciplines
  • Willingness to learn and develop a detailed understanding of the life support components and processes that enable human survival and performance in space
  • Relevant component hardware experience, which may include heat exchangers, pumps, fans, separators, motors, motor controllers, sensors, valves, pressure regulators, electronics, and environmental control hardware (e.g. thermal and humidity control, air revitalization, water reclamation etc.)
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and balance the priority of daily issues with longer term project requirements
  • Superior interpersonal and influencing skills, including coaching and mentoring of other engineering and operations staff
  • The ability to function as a team member, working professionally and respectfully with a diverse group of contributors
  • Natural presence and poise when presenting to internal and external customers including NASA Engineering and Management Teams
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • The highest level of integrity
  • Experience with high reliability, safety critical and fault tolerant component and subsystem testing and qualification
  • Ability to bring team members together and work problems to resolution
  • An analytical mind to conduct failure evaluations, assess operational risks and provide rationale for corrective actions and continued mission operations
  • Ability to conduct trade-studies, develop product requirements, cost estimates and proposals
  • Strong computer skills, MS Office/Project, SAP, Windchill
  • Experience supporting operational space flight hardware is highly desirable

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
