Flexible Work Arrangement - HybridThe (Sr./Executive) Director, Corporate Communications, reporting to the SVP, Corporate Client Services will work in a fast-paced, dynamic, high-tech environment. Overall, the role is responsible for four communication departments: internal, external, creative services/UX and conference services. Specifically, this role develops and implements strategies for internal communications, external public relations/communications, digital and social media communications, the PJM.com website and the PJM Now App.This role serves as the company's chief spokesperson and creates messaging needed for media and member and government relations departments. Most importantly, the individual establishes the development of communications strategies that support PJM's corporate strategy. Additional responsibilities include overseeing conference services which supports ~400 member and stakeholder meetings annually, including the Annual Meeting and A/V support. Oversees the Annual Report, community relations/ESG reports, media, speeches, the PJM daily internal newsletter, special events, All Hands employee meetings and networking events, videos, podcasts, live broadcasts and crisis communications. The role also oversees the branding, marketing and overall reputation of the nation's largest electric grid and supports all cultural and community involvement initiatives. This role will initiate, develop and implement public relations/communication/branding platforms linking organizational goals with communication objectives, strategies and messages utilizing appropriate communication vehicles. This role will manage ongoing communication and media relations programs and relationships with media representatives as well as provide communication counsel to the CEO and Executive Team.This role will create a communication strategy for PJM with a three (3) year action plan with metrics and measurements to ensure success. Support and develop leaders and team members within the Corporate Communications and Conference Services teams. Develop succession plans for this area. Coordinate with HR and DEI for all internal organization communications and messaging. Provide direction to the PJM leadership in the creation of all public communications to our membership, employees and stakeholders. Provide leadership correspondence and development to ensure appropriate, accurate and timely communiqués using a standard PJM style. Support Government & Member Services and participants through demonstrated excellence in PJM's organizational performance. Support the use of the Corporate TV studio and video for internal and external messaging. Identify opportunities for speakers and provide speaker prep.

Essential Functions:

  • Develops, communicates and implements effective strategies that support short, mid- and long-term growth objectives that affect the continual development of PJM's Services. Keeps pace with the demands of a rapidly changing business and assists leadership with the communication regarding reliability of the grid, planning for the grid of the future and PJM's markets.
  • Places emphasis on providing information to PJM stakeholders and external parties in an efficient and timely fashion. Consults with the Executive Team to develop strategies, strategic key messages and vehicles for communication to support specific PJM initiatives, or market activities. Participates in the development and execution of major organization initiatives by serving as the Company's communication strategist. Serves as spokesperson to internal and external audiences. Directs the team responsible for researching, writing, editing articles, internal/external publications, speeches and other communication documents for presentation to the PJM employees, membership, regulators, the media, and the Board of Managers. Works directly with the Executive Team to communicate information to our members. Contributes to the annual strategic planning process. Tracks key social, economic and industry issues that require communication planning and initiates appropriate plans. Manages Corporate Communications staff and external freelance consultants.
  • Develops organizational and communication systems that meet the needs of PJM's stakeholders, customers, PJM management and employees, regulators, government agencies, the Board of Managers, and the needs of a safe and reliable electrical grid.
  • Proactively works with other members of the PJM Executive and Management teams to ensure clear, consistent and strategic communications.
  • Prepares talking points and speeches for Board members for various meetings.
  • Provides direction to the team that supports the PJM corporate branding, website and App.
  • Interacts with other divisions to understand current and future objectives and support divisional leaders with all aspects of communication plans. Assists in the establishment of the overall business plan, strategic plan and Company objectives.
  • Supports Career Development initiatives and assists in the creation of Succession Plans for the Corporate Communications team.
  • Represents the company and its interests at various professional, industry, and community associations to further the company's name in the community or its positive relationship within the industry.
  • Provides leadership in internal and external communication initiatives to ensure that communication is consistently in alignment with the Company's strategic plan.

Characteristics and Qualifications:
Required:


  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Journalism or equivalent work experience
  • 15+ years of leadership experience in a managerial/supervisory role. Previous management experience in any of the following areas: Communications, Media, Public Relations, and/or Program Management. Capable of leading a team of professionals to excel in their jobs, continue learning and training for new skills and help to develop their careers.
  • Ability to give and receive tough messages
  • Ability and desire to build relationships and interact with a wide range of stakeholders and staff to maintain and enhance PJM's customer service reputation
  • Ability to collaborate, influence, and partner with business units
  • Ability to develop communications strategy using previous knowledge and experience
  • Ability to quickly establish and maintain a high performing team in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to possess interpersonal skills with a work behavior that exhibits energy, drive and motivation
  • Experience managing both full-time employees as well as contract staff understanding co-employment implications and risks
  • Experience creating division/department vision, strategy, and annual goals and objectives with tracking and measurement
  • Ability to coach and evaluate the performance of team

Preferred:

  • MBA degree
  • At least 10 years of experience Management experience working with Executive Team and CEO
  • Experience with PJM Agreements and Tariffs
  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
  • Experience supporting any of PJM Committees
