Position Summary

The intern will provide broad support to the Public and Patient Engagement Team (PPE) in support of PCORI's mission to produce high-integrity and evidence-based information driven by patients and other healthcare stakeholders.

The PPE team works collaboratively across PCORI programmatic activities to build, strengthen, and maintain PCORI's stakeholder relationships in support of the following aims:

  • Enhancing strategies to maintain, expand, and foster meaningful, effective, and sustainable engagement with PCORI's stakeholders to guide patient-centered CER.
  • Sharing PCORI's activities and products with key decision-makers.
  • Raising awareness and promoting engagement of new stakeholder audiences.
  • Encouraging partnerships and connections in and across stakeholder communities.
  • Bringing stakeholder perspectives into PCORI and its research investments.

The intern's contributions to the PPE team will enhance their understanding of patient-centered CER the diverse range of stakeholder organizations involved in the patient-centered CER enterprise and the broader healthcare landscape, as well as PCORI's key initiatives to foster stakeholder engagement throughout the research lifecycle.

These work streams include, but are not limited to, the following activities:
  • Supporting efforts to identify and build relationships with new individuals and organizations, especially those in the public and private health insurance/payer community, as well as stakeholders working to reduce health disparities and advance health equity.
  • Conducting qualitative analyses to identify gaps and opportunities in the PPE team's overall stakeholder engagement strategy or to summarize engagement efforts that support refinement of one or more of PCORI topic themes
  • Supporting project management and development of materials (e.g., slides and background materials) relevant to the PPE Team's external stakeholder engagement activities, such as in-person and virtual roundtables, workshops, and webinars.

Pay Range and Employment Status:

Interns shall be classified as temporary employees who are hired as interim replacements, to temporarily supplement the workforce, or to assist in the completion of a specific project and who are temporarily scheduled to work for a limited duration. Employment beyond any initially stated period does not in any way imply a change in employment status. Temporary workers are not eligible for PCORI benefits.
  • Bachelor's hourly pay: $17.50
  • Master's and above hourly pay: $20.00

Required Experience

Ideal candidates will be pursuing their postgraduate education in Social Science; Social Work; Health Policy; Public Health; Public Administration; Health Sciences, Health Administration/Management or related fields of study.

Experience with policy, healthcare, or research priorities of crucial stakeholder communities, such as patient/consumer organizations, clinicians, payers, or others.
  • Experience synthesizing data/information from various sources and identifying themes.
  • Ability to work independently and manage projects, as well as willingness to collaborate as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and experience drafting content for varied audiences.
  • Preliminary understanding of patient-centered CER, and patient and community engagement methods and practices through education or professional opportunities.
  • Experience interning, volunteering, or working for organization(s) of size and scope comparable to PCORI.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of project management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Products.
  • Knowledge of project management software (e.g., Asana, Monday.com) a plus.
