Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector seeks a Director, Manufacturing Operations 1 to join the team of operations leadership at the Baltimore Operations locations (BWI) in Linthicum, MD.

The BWI facility is a growing manufacturing organization responsible for the manufacturing, assembly, and testing of a diverse product portfolio within the Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector. The manufacturing facility contains a variety of operation cells focused on a specific manufacturing and testing process. The Director is responsible for leadership of several technologically similar process cells. Spans of control generally range between 300-500 people.
Operations functions based on World Class Operations principals with cell leadership focused on lean tools governed by an SQDCM focus. The Director the primary advocate responsible for safety process implementation in the cells. They have responsibility to establish, lead, and facilitate goal attainment, facilitation of resource management (human capital and equipment), operational planning (automated and manual processes), continuous improvement, customer satisfaction. The director oversees the Cell Managers and cell support leadership. Cells contain various levels of automation, manual operations, and test operations. Technologies encompass aspects of electronic component manufacturing, mechanical fabrication, coating, assembly, and customer shipment.
Qualified candidates will have demonstrated success leading broad organizations prioritizing safety, quality, and delivery within cost while achieving high levels of employee engagement. The position requires a solution-based orientation, urgency, unwavering ethics and values, and the demonstrated ability to be a trusted partner. Candidates must demonstrate a proven track record of solving complex problems through systematic and objective evaluation of information, effective communication, and championing and leading change with a diverse set of internal and external customers and suppliers. The Manufacturing Director reports to the site Senior Director of Manufacturing Operations.
Roles and responsibilities:
Safety within the workforce and throughout the facility.
* Lead Continuous Improvement initiatives through SQDCM and tools associated with root cause and corrective actions, and championing implementation of the system leadership principals.
* The Director is responsible for manufacturing and testing of extremely complex products within cost, schedule, and quality requirements.
* The Director must lead a complex, 24x7 engaged team comprising of 3 work groups covered by a CBA, exempt and non-exempt leaders and individual contributors creating and developing product and processes collaboratively with the internal and external organization.
* The Director must collaborate with other functional support organizations (Production Control, Finance, Quality, Supply Chain, Material Control, HR, LR, Product Engineering, etc.) to build an integrated and dynamic organization focused on internal and external customer results.
* Utilize MRP, Scheduling, and planning tools to resolve competing priorities, and maintain clear communication with customers regarding operations.
* Lead resource development to meet customer requirements (people, machines, processes, productivity improvement, utilization, etc.)
* Lead the team in continued improvement with resource utilization maximizing investment and operational efficiency.
* The Director is responsible to have the right resources, with the right skill, at the right time to meet customer requirements. Accomplishing this task requires collaboration with internal and external organization.
* Financial management including knowledge and understanding of Earned Value Management (EVM), rates and budgets, overhead budgets supporting manufacturing activities.
* Directing the planning and execution of strategic funds (capital and expense) for capital equipment and machinery improvement and expansion, as well as manufacturing technical activities.
* Interface within the Operations Program Management Team (OPM's) and Project Management Office (PMO's) in the development of manufacturing schedules and product budgets that support the site Annual Operating Plan (AOP).
* The Director is responsible for recruiting & mentoring future leaders, directing training & skill development initiatives and promoting Engagement & Inclusion activities.
* Success in this position is facilitated by an engaging leadership style fostering a high degree of teamwork and collaboration amongst peers, customers, and sector leadership.
* To be successful in this role, the selected candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills, be team oriented, have strong people leadership skills, and be able to effectively multi-task competing priorities and schedules.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment
* A minimum of 8 years of experience leading and managing a diverse team
* Progressive leadership experience in manufacturing/production, operations, program management, testing, or related area
* Experience working across multiple disciplines (design, manufacturing, and test engineering) with a focus on product development and producibility.
* Experience with financial management including project & process control and budgets, to include familiarity with DCAA and FAR regulations and EVMS methodologies
* Experience with industry and management methodologies focused on continuous improvement in manufacturing, such as ISO 9001, Total Quality Management or Six Sigma
* Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance is required.
* US Citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
BS Degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical or Test Engineering
* Experience with ISO9001/AS9100
* Demonstrated Six Sigma tools (ex. Green Belt, Black Belt)
* A track record of utilizing lean based philosophies to promote quality, productivity, people development and customer satisfaction.
* Previous experience working with a union represented population
* Demonstrated understanding of the program / product lifecycle in the areas of new business pursuit, design, supply chain management, receiving operations, inventory control, production control, product test & evaluation, reliability, root cause analysis, product sell off, shipping and product support as they apply to quality.
* Demonstrated basic understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools such as SAP and Materials Requirement Planning (MRP).
* Previous experience, success oriented leading high performance, multidiscipline teams in highly complex, low volume manufacturing operation.
* Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, dynamic, and high visibility environment.
* The ability to effectively motivate performance urgency.
* Active US Top Secret clearance is preferred
Salary Range: $165,400 - $248,000
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
