Job Summary

The Senior Tax Manager role is a unique opportunity to lead the indirect tax function while also developing robust tax knowledge and gaining broad tax experience in multiple focus areas, reporting directly to and working closely with the Senior Director of Tax. The Senior Tax Manager maintains tax records and is responsible for all aspects of transaction tax, property tax, business licenses, etc. for multiple legal entities and assists with corporate income, franchise and partnership tax matters.

Essential Responsibilities 

Indirect Tax

  • Prepare and file state, local, and international transaction tax returns while continuously and proactively reviewing underlying data and processes to identify areas for improvement and increased efficiencies.
  • Responsible for all inquiries from tax authorities, other MLB departments, and vendors and maintain files and support for response.
  • Subject matter expert on indirect tax laws, updates, and revisions to identify issues potentially affecting MLB and to present on those issues and proposed solutions.
  • Review system transactional data to ascertain the proper tax treatment, investigate discrepancies, and research corresponding tax law to prepare analyses and reconciliations, make necessary adjustments, and seek to prevent issues from continuing in the future.
  • Research product taxability by jurisdiction as needed and summarize findings.
  • Own compliance/tax calendar for transaction tax, property tax, business licenses, and other tax or information filings to ensure registration and reporting obligations are met on time.

Corporate Income, Franchise, and Partnership Tax

  • Prepare and file state and local returns not based on income (e.g. business and occupation, commercial activity, gross receipts).
  • Assist with income and partnership tax payments and work closely with AP and accounting to ensure payments are properly recorded to GL.
  • Partner with payroll and accounting to gather information and prepare annual state and international apportionment files.
  • Be an integral part of the federal tax provision and return process
  • Lead other tax projects as needed (e.g. R&D tax credit, corporate plane analysis).

General Accounting

  • Create and prepare analysis and reconciliations of tax GL accounts to support account balances.
  • Proactively research, track, and resolve accounting discrepancies within the tax accounts.
  • Lead the month end close processes, ensuring tax payments and accruals are properly recorded.

Qualifications

  • 6-8 years of relevant tax experience, ideally with a mix at both a Big 4 accounting firm and in industry.
  • Licensed CPA Required
  • Excellent communication skills and high attention to detail: written and quantitative.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Commitment to taking ownership of and pride in your work.
  • Ability to multitask to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Collaborative and positive orientation.
  • Willingness to pivot and learn.
  • Able to meet this position’s weekly requirement for four (4) days a week in-office plus one (1) remote work day.

Additional qualifications that are preferred include:

  • Experience with Oracle ERP
  • Experience with Avalara or other transaction tax software implementation.

Per the NYC pay transparency law, the hiring range for this position is $135,000 - $165,000.
