Job Description
The Medical Writing & Disclosure (MW&D) Department of the GCTO organization prepares a variety of regulated documentation in support of the clinical development portfolio and compliance in public disclosure of clinical trials and their results, document disclosure, and data sharing with external researchers.
The Senior Director of Global Health Literacy & Health Equity is the enterprise lead for establishing our company as an industry leader and sought-after partner in Health Literacy, Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) and Health Equity. The position is global in scope.
Internal-Facing Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership in health literacy, SDoH, and health equity across the enterprise and serve as health equity point of contact for our Research & Development Division
- Serve as an expert on informed consent policy and lead assessment/implementation of policy changes while integrating health literacy, and health equity principles into the informed consent process
- Engage with global affiliates and company leaders to co-create and deploy strategic health literacy initiatives that support business priorities and drive business impact.
- Collaborate cross-divisional (eg, with our Research & Development Division pharmacovigilance, Social Business Innovation, and Policy, Communication & Population Health, including Patient Innovation & Engagement, etc.) to lead cross-divisional health literacy working groups to address urgent issues, to support shared objectives for health literacy/equity, and to integrate health literacy/equity and SDoH into organizational practices
- Serve on the Review Committee for Patient Engagement, Diversity & Health Literacy Investigator Studies Program
- Drive innovative patient labeling initiative to enhance product communication post-approval.
- Incorporate health literacy and SDoH into brand strategy
- Integrate health literacy data into CORE SDoH database and develop data-driven approaches to identify and measure new, scalable models of SDoH/health literacy
- Participate in SDoH working groups, data analytics and health equity accelerator
- Partner with digital engagement teams to develop SOPs for digital health literacy reviews
- Promote cultural competence and health literacy in clinical investigator training
- Engage in diversity, inclusion and equity initiatives through a variety of committees and councils.
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the MW&D department in alignment with enterprise goals and mission, business drivers, and industry trends and innovations related to health literacy, cultural competence, and health equity.
- Lead, coach and develop staff in alignment with business needs and development opportunities.

External-Facing Responsibilities
- Lead/participate in global working groups with pharma, scientific leaders, patient advocates, and regulators (eg, National Academy of Medicine Health Literacy Roundtable)
- Partner with patient advocates on talks, publications, and working groups on health literacy/equity and SDoH
- Demonstrate scientific leadership by engaging with regulators, scientific leaders, and policymakers regarding health literacy, in collaboration with global policy teams
- Advance the field of health literacy and enhance our corporate reputation through publishing manuscripts, with internal and external authors, and presenting at influential global conferences on health literacy, equity, and patient-focused initiatives
Qualifications
- Required: Bachelor's degree n a health-related or scientific discipline (e.g., life sciences, analytical, pharmacy, medicine, health policy, public health, or similar)
- Preferred: Master's degree or advanced education in related field (business, public health, health policy or similar)
Skills & Experience
- Industry Experience: 10+ years in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, including 7-10+ years focused on health literacy in a healthcare setting (preferably in the pharmaceutical industry across multiple therapeutic areas and in research/marketing)
- Leadership & Innovation: Proven track record in developing and implementing strategic, innovative solutions that yield tangible results in policy, business, and diversity; demonstrated leadership in managing people, programs, and processes, leading meetings, and influencing matrix environments.
- Expert Knowledge: Expertise in health literacy principles, ICH regulations, and compliance with corporate and regional policies; well-established leadership in global health literacy/equity, as evidenced by publications, presentations, and a deep understanding of external trends impacting patients and our industry
- Collaboration Skills: Effective collaborator with experience working across functions and regions to achieve goals without direct authority; demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and ability to work effectively with diverse partners, especially as health equity disproportionately impacts historically underserved communities.
- Communication Skills: Effective communicator (written, oral, presenter) with the ability to clearly articulate messages to all levels of the organization, including senior leaders.
- Passion for Health Literacy: Ability to inspire and drive engagement for health literacy and equity across divisions and regions; established connections/network of health literacy experts, patient advocates, researchers, and others working in health equity.
- Global Engagement: Invited participant in global working groups and speaker on health literacy/equity; adept in leading diverse groups, including industry experts, patients, and regulators, and in engaging with global regulatory authorities
- Program Leadership: Demonstrated success in managing large-scale, complex, cross-functional programs within healthcare organizations, including advanced decision-making, analytical, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and critical thinking skills; ability to influence a broader view of issues to maximize organizational benefit and impact
- Therapeutic Focus: Significant experience in oncology and vaccine confidence areas

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

The Company is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this job in certain states and cities within the United States. Final determinations with respect to salary will take into account a number of factors, which may include, but not be limited to the primary work location and the chosen candidate's relevant skills, experience, and education.
Expected US salary range:
$200,200.00 - $315,100.00
