The Opportunity: 

Mattel is currently seeking a Digital Modelmaker as a new addition to our Model Shop Team.

What Your Impact Will Be: 

 

  • Lead and manage low to medium complexity model-making projects, developing prototypes with basic mechanical features based on drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions.
  • Leverage CAD software to drive and support project development.
  • Collaborate directly with Model Shop Supervisors, Leads, and Design & Development teams to ensure project alignment and efficiency.
  • Contribute to the ideation and invention process when applicable, offering innovative solutions and insights.
  • Provide model-making support for key activities such as meetings, trade shows, testing, and presentations.
  • Continuously expand skillset and knowledge through cross-training opportunities across various processes and technologies.
  • Ensure adherence to strict safety protocols in the workplace.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure the upkeep of equipment.
  • Provide support to other functional areas, including Print & Cut, 3D Printing, Roto-molding, Molds & Casting, and Tool Crib as needed.
  • Document and share work processes with cross-functional teams within the Design & Development community.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service, ensuring satisfaction with every project.

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

  • Completion of a certified apprenticeship program, including training in CAD and its application.
  • A combination of college or trade school education and hands-on experience as a model maker, with a focus on CAD in consumer products or toy design.
  • Proven experience in model making with CAD application for consumer products or toys, showcasing progressive skill development and increasing responsibilities.
  • Solid understanding of model-making practices and techniques.
  • Proficient in at least one specialized process such as roto-molding, mold-making, casting, color matching, painting, scanning, laser cutting, CNC, or 3D printing.
  • Hands-on experience with shop machinery, including mill, drill press, lathe, grinder, table saw, and band saw.
  • Proficient in one or more 3D CAD applications, such as Creo, SolidWorks, Rhino, Freeform, ZBrush, or Alias.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills with an ability to present complex ideas clearly.
  • Familiar with applications like Outlook, Teams, Zoom, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Illustrator, Photoshop, and other digital tools.
  • Understanding of engineering and manufacturing principles is a plus.
  • Ability to determine the best approach for model development by utilizing both digital and traditional methods.
  • Proficient in 2D design applications like Photoshop and Illustrator. Demonstrated a growth mindset by staying curious and continuously learning, embracing challenges, and improving themselves.

The base hourly rate for this position is between $32 and $38.
**This range is indicative of projected hiring range, however base hourly rate will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience.
