The Opportunity

As the Head of Forecast Development & Attribution, you will be responsible for developing and executing the quarterly GAAP and STAT financial forecast (balance sheet, income statement, and cash flows) for MassMutual's consolidated operations, which includes insurance entities, affiliates, and strategic investments. This is a highly critical and influential role within the Financial Forecasting team, reporting to the Head of Financial Forecasting.

As part of the Financial Forecasting team, you will lead the financial and investment forecast process by reviewing inputs and assumptions for MassMutual's affiliated and strategic investments, product manufacturing channels, and distribution channels in advance of each forecast run to ensure that assumptions are relevant, well-documented, and understood by users. You will also analyze and create key storylines related to MassMutual's financial forecast to tell the 'story' of where the numbers are heading. In this role, it is expected that you will drive continuous improvement of the forecast process to enhance forecasting capabilities to improve strategic analysis of the business to help drive management of the business.

The Team

The Financial Forecasting team at MassMutual is dynamic and consists of individuals with backgrounds in quantitative, analytical, and actuarial fields of study. The team prides itself on being proactive and highly responsive to client needs, anticipating upcoming deliverables, and taking accountability for proper execution. The team is located in Springfield MA and Boston MA.

The Impact
  • Manage a team of finance professionals with a continuous focus on the proper attribution of results at a channel, product, and entity level to better tell the story and allow for data-driven financial analysis.
  • Drive robust end-to-end financial forecasting processes that are driver-based and automated, providing actionable insights on all key performance indicators.
  • Link finance to enterprise strategy and senior executives based on an understanding of both the business and financial conditions.
  • Provide detailed attribution walks of forecast and plan results to senior executive leadership teams, strategic finance business partners, and business leads.
  • Speak to results so that the organization understands all the storylines and answer all questions and ad hoc requests related to the forecast.
  • Work with the Anaplan Masterbuilder and the Head of Actuarial Models Forecasting to ensure the forecast provides the appropriate level of data granularity, that models are designed effectively and operating efficiently to measure profitability and overall financial performance.
  • Effectively identify, utilize, and present data in a way that facilitates evidence-based decision-making.
  • Work with the Financial Insights team to enhance attribution dashboard reporting structure, develop new financial tools, and be first adopters of new technology, all while ensuring accuracy and timeliness of results.
  • Analyze P&L, Balance Sheet, and key metrics for MassMutual's strategic, consolidated, distribution, and product manufacturing channels; provide analysis and reporting on Insurance, Asset Fee, and Investment margins and explain changes from prior quarter and forecast.


The Minimum Qualifications
  • 10+ years of work experience with a track record of increasing responsibility.
  • High degree of financial acumen, including a strong understanding of various insurance products (whole life, variable annuity, fixed annuity, disability, etc.), GAAP and STAT accounting experience on life and annuity insurance products, investments, and derivatives.
  • Deep knowledge of investment concepts such as allocation models, segmentation, analysis of investment margin, and attribution analysis.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, actuarial science, economics, finance, or related discipline.
  • Professional certifications such as CPA, MBA, FSA, CFA, and/or FCIA preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills: ability to analyze financial data sets and tell the story of the data.
  • Familiarity with predictive forecasting techniques and scenario modeling.
  • Proven ability to complete high-quality work efficiently and increase autonomy over time.
  • Able to build and maintain strong working relationships across cross-functional groups.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to express ideas in an articulate, organized, and persuasive manner to leadership, staff, rating agencies, etc.
  • Able to work well under pressure and manage multiple deliverables.
  • Able to travel between Boston, MA, Cincinnati OH, and Springfield, MA as needed.


The Ideal Qualifications
  • Experience with Tableau, MicroStrategy, and Alation.
  • Experience with data platforms including Bloomberg, Thomson One, SNL, and Rating Agencies.
  • Previous accounting policy experience highly desired.
  • Strong understanding of various asset classes, including IG Bonds, mortgages, private equity, real estate, and derivatives.
  • Experience with M&A, different types of legal entities, transfer pricing, allocations, and consolidation.
  • Deep knowledge of insurance pricing models, ALM, VNB calculations, valuation, and metrics such as AUM, cash flows, and policy counts.
