The Tooling Engineer is responsible to manage all tooling and tooling build timelines (Tool Tracker) to ensure consistently high-quality components are produced on time and cost effectively. The Tooling Engineer is expected to ensure the most up to date technologies are utilized to continuously improve our product, meeting our customer's expectations. The Tooling Engineer has input into the short- and long-term strategic tooling plans. The tooling engineer will also participate in Center of Excellence (C.O.E.) to provide best practices in the metal forming section for all forming sections. Maintain and improve documents on the C.O.E. The Tooling Engineer is responsible for new tooling buy-off at vendors and will also assist production assembly tooling when required.
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of five (5) years manufacturing experience in the automotive industry. Familiar with metal fabricating, assembly processes and related tooling
- Minimum 5 years post Graduation/apprenticeship experience in a press shop for metal forming.
- University education (Mechanical Engineering) or Community College graduate technical and/or a certified apprenticeship in tool & die
- Knowledge of progressive dies, transfer dies, blank forming, tube forming
- Advanced GD&T
- Effective communication and presentation skills (verbal and written) Team-oriented approach to problem solving
- Demonstrated planning and system implementation ability; Proficiency in related computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project, VISI, solid works)
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that budgets, forecasting and objectives are achieved and/or exceeded with respect to tooling.
- Co-ordinates with other departments for tooling, equipment and engineering changes and FMEA
- Acts as technical contact for vendors on tooling issues
- Develops and maintains all tooling progress reports
- Reviews tooling blank size for new business for optimization of material.
- Work with purchasing, Program Manager and production on various items
- Support Manufacturing Engineering, vendors, Maintenance and Continuous Improvement as needed
- Quote and Send RFQ's to vendors and participate in decisions when sourcing.
- Travel as required with a valid passport
- Participates as required in ISO/IATF 16949 by adhering to policies and procedures
- Performs other duties as assigned by management
