The ideal candidate will have space domain experienceworking with operators, analysts, and engineers through all stages of the ground systems product lifecycle - from development to test and operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design components to facilitate the necessary structure for our payload designs while ensuring functionality from an environmental perspective from fabrication to operation (vibe, shock, shipping, launch, and in orbit, etc.).
  • Work with our team to make sure all requirements are met (including manufacturability, cost, and schedule).
  • Understand the complete mechanical design from overall system level to individual piece parts.
  • Perform and provide mechanical analysis of designs (including tolerance and stack-ups), facilitating Monte Carlo analysis to verify the design's capability across manufacturing tolerances and operational conditions.
  • Build prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful prototypes into production.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering to break down large, complex assemblies into logical subassemblies and sub-processes based on manufacturing capabilities, cost, and product requirements.
  • Develop agreed-upon project schedules and priorities with the project and engineering management leads and schedule projects/resources to meet deadlines.
  • Produce regular progress reports and documentation with project Engineering Manager / Technical Lead.
  • Provide technical leadership to less experienced engineers and technicians and contribute to the success of a collaborative team.
  • Identify and communicate any engineering constraints/issues to project Engineering Manager / Technical Lead.
  • Collaborate with engineering staff and other personnel to identify and resolve problems with the design or implementation.
  • Produce mechanical engineering drawings and layouts for peer reviews, vendors, and customer evaluations.
  • Attend regular project and design reviews and provide feedback on timings and completion of work to the projects team.
  • Identify and highlight areas where additional support may be required to ensure timely and accurate completion of work.
  • Generate and/or process engineering change orders (ECO's) as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 8-12 years of work experience
  • Experience and high proficiency with GD&T and performing tolerance stack up analysis.
  • Experience and high proficiency with CAD based software such as SolidWorks.
  • Experience with mechanical engineering design and development process and workflow.
  • Experience working cross-functional teams for project-wide collaboration.
  • Experience with design risk assessments (DRA), failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), and Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA).
  • Identify complex technical issues and provide necessary solutions to eliminate root causes.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Experience with identifying and implementing continuous improvement solutions.
  • Possess strong and fluent communication, project focus, and execution skills.
  • US Citizen with the ability to obtain Secret clearance
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a development team.
  • Self-motivation and comfort working in a fast-moving high-tech environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with space products (space vehicle or payload) design, manufacturing, or support that includes broad demonstrated experience in electrical, mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineering including product design, validation, test, troubleshooting, repair, and support evaluating unique space environment-induced designs through low power and stress calculations and for cost-effectiveness and ease of manufacture and maintenance.
  • Space Mechanical Systems familiarity.
  • US Citizen with current TS/SCI clearance
  • Experience with US DoD Contract Data Requirements List (CDRLs) and mechanical-related documentation as required by US DoD Data Item Descriptions.
  • Capable of utilizing advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques (sub-modeling approach, contact analysis, non-linear analysis), and test procedures for material characterization/testing Warpage/Stress analysis, Solder joint reliability (SJR) prediction, and board assembly process simulation analysis.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $104,650.00 - $189,175.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
