Job overview and responsibilities

Safety is our highest priority and the core of everything we do at United.  It is the bedrock of what United is built on.  Come be part of the Digital Technology team that partners with our Corporate Safety team to enable solutions that support these values and capabilities at the airline.

This Senior Manager - IT Application Development position will lead a team of business analysts and developers focused on defining, building, delivering and running technology for the following functions:

·        Emergency Response

·        Business Continuity Planning

·        Wellness Checks

·        Corporate Medical

We are embarking on several transformations across the company and this role will play a key role in innovation and technology change for Corporate Safety as well as the enterprise. 

This role will have responsibility for evaluating, implementing and running a variety of licensed software as well as building our own in-house solutions that are cloud-based.  The individual will use groundbreaking technologies and enterprise grade integration software daily and will be relied upon to help take the team to the next level. This role demands a strong leader who can oversee budgets, deliverables, and development metrics and resource planning.  

This position will collaborate extensively with other areas of the Digital Technology teams that support Corporate Safety, TechOps, Crew, Human Resources as well as Enterprise Architecture, Platform Engineering, Digital PMO, Digital Operations and Cyber Security.

·        Roadmap Delivery

o   Lead activities to focus on modernizing the digital solutions to support the safety team needs and build future state roadmaps.

o   Collaborate with product and architecture teams to design, develop, deploy and support and modernize applications.

o   Oversee projects to ensure delivery of work requests and projects are within committed budget, on schedule, and the quality of individual projects meets the overall program performance goals.

o   Manage development and application KPIs, take corrective actions where necessary proper documentation of applications and implement continuous improvements.

·        Development Standards, Tools & Architecture

o   Ensure IT application development process disciplines (solution delivery, project management, work requests, QA, etc.) and standards are established, effectively managed and performed

o   Play a key role in formulating and following the procedures and processes for development

o   Create a team structure and process for quality control during development, testing for debugging code and deployment

o   Remain informed of new technologies and/or business processes and incorporating those technologies to improve the productivity of the applications staff and software systems' maintainability

o   Drive continuous improvement and be adaptable to changing designs and to adding performance enhancements

·        Leadership

o   Lead a multi-functional impactful team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining safety technology

o   Manage vendor development teams assigned to projects and core support

o   Foster professional development and energy in the team

o   Establish department and individual goals

o   Assess and recommend improvements to the organization structure, roles and responsibilities

o   Perform short- and long-term resources planning to ensure the proper number of resources and right skills are available to meet project goals and schedules

o   Use creative and proactive leadership skills to address project challenges and opportunities

Qualifications

Required 

  • Bachelor's degree or comparable work experience
  • Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration or other related field
  • 5-7+ years of related work experience
  • 3+ years of application development and/or data engineering development
  • Cloud experience
  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following:  .Net, Java, Python or other modern language(s)
  • Working knowledge of RestAPI development and microservices development patterns
  • Strong project organizations skill, including prioritization, planning and organization
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
