Role Purpose:

Jumio is looking for an experienced privacy lawyer to lead the company’s privacy program worldwide.  This role will report to the General Counsel located in Sunnyvale, CA, with the option of working remotely in the U.S. 

In this role you will be an important strategic advisor for the company.  You will be a key member of the legal team and will partner with leaders across the company to shape and lead the company’s worldwide privacy strategy and program.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the company’s worldwide privacy strategy and program.  Track the evolving legal landscape, and provide practical guidance for ongoing compliance.  Develop, evolve and oversee policies and frameworks that enable compliant uses of data throughout the company.  Develop project plans and manage cross-functional teams to drive and achieve the foregoing.  
  • Work closely with the company’s product, engineering, information security and other internal teams on the privacy aspects of our product offerings’ development, implementation and maintenance, as well as related operations and processes of the company.
  • Track Artificial Intelligence regulations and provide support developing and implementing related compliance measures.  
  • Partner with the company’s sales and procurement teams, providing direct assistance in transactions, including presenting and negotiating privacy and related regulatory positions, and the drafting of same.  Work closely with sales and product teams to field and resolve customer, vendor and other third party inquiries regarding privacy and related regulatory topics. 
  • Represent the company in privacy matters with external parties, including regulators, certification authorities, investors and others. 
  • Provide internal training on privacy matters, effectively translating legal advice into meaningful guidance for innovative business teams.
  • Serve as the company’s DPO, if requested  
  • Manage related legal matters as needed, including with respect to M&A and other corporate initiatives, and litigation.
  • Travel periodically to one of Jumio’s global locations as projects require. 

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Licensed attorney in at least one U.S. state, with 7+ years privacy experience
  • Expert knowledge of worldwide data privacy and protection laws; CIPP certification
  • Extremely practical, business oriented approach to practicing law within a company setting
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate to all organizational levels
  • Excellent project management, drafting (clear and streamlined), negotiation and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to quickly grasp complexities of a technology offering and a company’s internal systems and processes

In order to be successful in this role, you will need to have significant experience in the following areas, with a technology offering focus: 

  • Successful record of leading and scaling privacy programs, including internal policies, data lifecycle, employee training and related privacy matters
  • Adept at working collaboratively with engineering, product, information security, and sales teams, and well as with senior executives, including experience working with product leaders to guide product roadmaps; proven ability to dig into and understand technology products’ workings, as well as a company’s internal systems and processes
  • Demonstrated success collaborating with customers, governmental authorities, vendors and other external parties
  • Extensive experience with commercial technology agreements (customer, vendor and partner agreement drafting and negotiations with respect to privacy and related regulatory postures), including multijurisdictional transactions
  • M&A and corporate initiatives
  • Ability to productively work both independently as well as within the context of a collegial team

Great to have Experience and Qualifications:

  • Prior in-house experience within a high-growth technology company is a major plus
  • Familiarity with biometrics laws
  • International experience
