Summary:
The Executive Producer, Production & Development will lead the development, editorial oversight, and production of innovative science media for HHMI Tangled Bank Studios. This includes documentaries, series, podcasts, social media, and more, designed to engage broad audiences across major platforms such as broadcast, streaming, digital, and film festivals.
As a senior team member, the Executive Producer will drive project development and production, working closely with the Head of Studio and collaborating with internal teams to oversee editorial direction, manage budgets and schedules, and maximize audience reach and impact. Additionally, they will provide editorial support to HHMI Communications and BioInteractive upon request.
This role is based at our Chevy Chase, MD headquarters three days a week in person and work two days remotely.

What you'll do:
- Lead the development of mission-aligned content ideas, proposals, and treatments.
- Identify and collaborate with production companies, filmmakers, and distribution partners.
- Provide editorial oversight, ensuring scientific accuracy and creative excellence across all production elements of projects, including scripts, music, narration, and graphics.
- Serve as the primary editorial contact for project partners throughout development and production.
- Stay informed of industry trends and explore new platforms for science communication.
- Pitch projects to distributors and explore distribution opportunities.
- Coordinate with the Production and Operations team to align contracts, budgets, and schedules with project needs.
- Collaborate with the Impact and Communications team to enhance audience engagement and outreach.
- Represent HHMI Tangled Bank Studios at industry events, festivals, and conferences.
What you bring:
- Bachelor's degree in media or science communication, or equivalent experience; a background in science or science communication strongly preferred.
- 15+ years of experience in science filmmaking, short-form content, science communication, or related creative leadership roles.
- Expertise in filmmaking, including editorial processes, graphics, music, research practices, distribution, and impact strategies.
- Highly organized leader with strong project management skills and the ability to navigate complex assignments.
- Creative thinker with a vision for advancing science storytelling across multiple platforms.
- Collaborative team player who fosters enthusiasm and effective teamwork.
- Strong communicator and writer skilled in managing input from multiple stakeholders.
Physical Requirements:
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range
$195,580.80 (minimum) - $244,476.00 (midpoint) - $317,818.80 (maximum)

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
